Hi everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Loretta, and I just found out I'm pregnant with (hopefully) #3. Eek! My kiddoes are 8 and 5, and I had to have help to get pregnant with my last one, so I kind of figured we were done. Oops! :-) I *think* I may be due sometime around June 18th because nausea is kicking in today, but I could be anywhere from 4 to 11 weeks along (stupid cycles).

I called yesterday to make an appointment with the OB that everyone I work with recommends, but she can't see me until November 11th! I think I'm stuck though, so I'll just be here panicking until then. I had a missed miscarriage of twins in 2010, so I'm not 100% confident this time, plus I have no idea how far along I am. That said, I'm thrilled to be prego, and looking forward to this 100%.

I'm a NICU nurse in a level III NICU, so don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions about baby health stuff like prematurity, birth defects, or even what your baby would be doing if they were out with you at 24 weeks, etc.

Looking forward to talking to all of you,
Loretta

Thanks! :-)

In answer to your question, they run a pretty broad spectrum. We do get full-term twins that have no issues at all and go straight home, but I'd say it's more common that we see them at 34-36 weeks when they outgrow their living accomodations. Those kiddoes stay with us a few days or sometimes a week or two, just until they've got eating figured out and can keep themselves warm. That said, with twin gestations, moms have a higher risk of pretty much everything that could happen, so we do see more twin micro-preemies (not the norm though). We generally give moms a goal date of their due date to go home if their baby was premature, so the earlier they come, usually the longer they have to stay in the NICU.

Do you have twins coming?

Yes I do. We have claimed down about the idea of twins...it was a huge surprise! No history and no help.

Congratulations!

You will do great, but I know it's scary. Don't fret too much yet about when you'll deliver. It probably will be a little earlier than you did with other pregnancies, but every pregnancy is different.

Congratulations on number three!

I had a 30-weeker in 2007 and she spent 6 weeks in the NICU. She spent 2 1/2 weeks in Level III and then graduated to Level II before coming home at 4lb, 2oz on an apnea monitor. It was quite the ride and we saw many babies much sicker than her during our stay. NICU nurses are pretty amazing people.
