The directions they came w/ said wash & dry 3-5x. Does this mean wash then dry, wash then dry, etc etc or does it mean to wash 3-5x in a row & then dry? I'm going to be washing & drying dipes all day!

I was planning on washing and drying mine 3-5 times... assuming this would help them shrink up / quilt up the way they are supposed to. Not sure though... so I'll be checking back for answers too!

hmmm.. I googled a bit- I found one site that said just wash them 3-4 times and then dry them all...

And I found this on ehow.com

Prefolds need to be washed 5 or 6 times before they are ready to use. Do not wash with other diapers until they are fully prepped because the oils in the prefolds could ruin your other diapers.

Step 2
Wash in hot water with or without a small amount of detergent. You do not need extra rinses to remove the excess soap. You may want to not use detergent for the last couple washings instead.

Step 3
Prefolds are practically impossible to ruin through washing, you can wash them with your regular clothes while you prep.

Step 4
Drying in between washes may help fluff them faster.

Step 5
Alternately, you can prep your prefolds by boiling in a large pot on the stove for 30 minutes and then wash two times.

Ok- here's what I'm going to do-- I love this site and always end up here when I'm in doubt!

"Prefold Diapers

Before use wash prefold diapers on hot 5 times with detergent. Wash on hot once without detergent. Dry on high heat in dryer."

Thank you so much! Each cycle on our HE washer is 50 minutes! This really is going to take most of the day

Haha! Ours too.. I know that if they are unbleached they require more washing cycles... because they have more oils? I read that somewhere...

Good luck! I'm going to be getting mine ready to go this weekend!!

I washed 3 times, dried, and then wash atleast another time...

Even AFTER prepping, they'll likely still fluff a bit after a handful of washes.

When i prepped my prefolds way back when we started, I washed, then dried, wash then dry, about 5 times. It really helped them quilt up nicely.

ETA: I only used detergent in the first wash. After that i used nothing.

When I prep I use detergent in the first cycle, and then none after that. I've prepped several batches - I did the wash-dry x 5, the wash-dry x 3, and then the last time I did two wash cycles followed by a dry, and called it even.

After you wash them a few more times, even after fully prepping, they'll get more absorbant. Two washes and a dry doesn't leave them at absorbing much, but they were the only clean and dry ones I had at the time. They did the job I needed them too.

I dried them in between washes and I did the same thing with my CottonWoodBaby.com gDiaper inserts so they would shrink to fit the little G's!
