I'm new to this whole cloth diapering thing...and I have no clue which inserts to buy. I want the most absorbent and obviously not bulky if possible... These are the options that the site (fuzzi bunz store) offers... Opinions???

Microterry in 3 layers by FBS

Soft and quick to dry microterry in 3 layers by MOE

Super absorbent hemp fleece in 4 layers

Thin & trim hemp jersey in 6 layers--thinnest option

The hemp ones are quite a bit more expensive, but if it is going to make or break the whole cloth diapering thing, I'm all over it!

I suppose I could consider making some liners - how difficult would that be??? I am not so talented with a sewing machine, but I would think I could whip some of those out in not too much time...

Thanks!

I personally really like hemp jersey. VERY trim without compromising absorbancy.

It's pretty easy to make liners, just cut a bunch of rectangles in the right size, layer them, and serge the edges.

Really stupid question... Can I just go into JoAnn's and ask for hemp jersy material and they will know what I want? How many layers do you put together? Do you sew them in a rectangle and then fold them each time you stuff the pocket - or can you sew them that way?

Thanks for your help!!! I may get the ones that come with the diapers and then take this on as a little project to make the other liners.

JO-anns doesn't carry hemp. technically it's not produced or sold in US. There are a few retailers online, but most charge WAY too much!

this one is about the cheapest place to get it without going through a co-op (a group of people that get together and buy a huge roll to get the wholesale price): sewzanne's fabrics

Ebay is a great place also. I often see ads for 5 yards for $25. I think i figured out that you can get roughly 3-4 liners per yard. Since most hemp liners are at least $3, you end up saving by making your own.

5-6 layers of the hemp jersey is enough. Just make your liners the same size as your pocket, unless you want to make them bigger so that when your baby gets into larger sizes you can use the same ones.

just fold the fabric a few times until you get several layers, then cut out rectangles. I think a typical insert is about 14x5". this is much easier if you have a rotary cutter, but I don't, so I know you can still do it with scissors, you just don't get your lines as straight

You can also check the diaper swapper boards and ebay for inserts, you can often get them for less than retail. The only swapper board I go on is diaper swappers. Just be careful that you know the retail price so you don't over pay.

I have heard great things about cottonbabies and joey bunz. I was just using prefolds, but I am going to pick up some microfiber towels at walmart today, since those keep getting mentioned here too.

I like hemp. Great absorbancy. I used Joey Bunz when we did Fuzzi Bunz. They were made of hemp.
