Those of you with hard water, what do you do differently for washing your diapers? We technically have hard water, but I've never had problems washing our clothes or with spots on our dishes. So I don't think it's *that* hard. I alternate right now between All Free & Clear HE and Tide because I got a bunch on sale. We have front loaders, if that helps. I've seen the special detergents but I'd rather not do those unless we have to later.
With prefolds on newborns... could you technically just use snappis or something to pin the diaper instead of using a cover? I will buy some covers, but I don't want to buy a ton when they will be outgrown so quickly. I'm thinking around the house and with regular diapers changes without a cover should be fine. What do you think?
With closures for diapers/covers- which is your favorite and why? I've seen velcro and snaps but also hook and loop? The hook and loop looked like velcro if I recall correctly though.
I have hard water, and I use Tide powder. I highly recommend it. We have never had an issue. I have a top loader, but I know a lot of people use the HE powder and it supposedly works great.
Yes, you can pin or snappi your prefolds on your newborn, but you will also need a cover to go over it. Since Kaley was so big, you can probably skip the newborn size and go directly to smalls, since most fit from around 8-9 pounds on up. If you're not adverse to rinsing out your covers by hand, you can get away with a lot fewer of them. But yes, around the house you can definitely go coverless, but you just need to change more often. I let Isla go coverless in a fitted diaper all the time.
And hook and loop is just another name for velcro or aplix. It is all the same. I think hook and loop is the generic name, and the others are actually brand names.
We have hard water. Haven't been using cloth long enough to know if there will be a problem with our current routine or not. I just do a cold rinse, hot wash with All free and clear (commissary version without brighteners), and another cold rinse.
I do let DS hang around the house in a prefold without a cover (and without other clothes). Now we have all tile floors though (military base housing, not be choice lol), so I'm not worried about leaks. If I had carpet, I'd only let him go coverless when on a surface that easily washable. It's HOT here already, so DS isn't spending a lot of time in clothes. I only have 2 covers. Both are one size snap covers. Wouldn't work on an itty bitty, but it wouldn't take all that long for a baby to be able to fit in them (well, at least the size of my baby).
I have no idea if powder or liquid is better. This is the only board I've been on where people recommend powder over liquid. I can't find a cloth safe powder at the commissary here, so just planning on sticking to my All liquid.
I have really hard water I use Claudia's choice detergent. Personally I would NEVER EVER use tide on my clothes or babies because of all the junk in them and they never feel really clean to me, it always feels like something is left over. Also whenever I have bought used diapers that have been washed in tide I've had to strip them multiple times before all the residue was out. I would invest in some more covers, I think about 4 would be adequate because of the newborn poo explosions, they always liked to leak out onto the covers and if he wasn't wearing one it would have gone everywhere. You should be able to pick some up cheap. Orion fit size small in Bummis when he was newborn, he is still in them just barely at 4monthes.

I'm not a fan of Tide in general just because I feel like there is a residue left in my clothes and I don't like the smell. Tide did not work well for my diapers. I think I have soft water, so I was using a tablespoon of powder and rinsing 4-5 times. Abri would still get a rash. Once I stopped using it, the rash went away and I'm back to just 2 rinses. I use Clean B detergent and love it!
I've never been able for Abri to go coverless with prefolds, but some of her fitteds can go without covers for a little bit. I skipped the newborn size diapers and covers. The smalls fit for about 4 months and at almost a year she is still in the mediums with plenty of room. I only had 6 small covers and have 9 now (but that's just because I wanted a few others and didn't need them).
