Hi ladies! I don't frequent this board, but I'm due with my second child March 5th and am switching to full-time cloth diapering. I have a son who turns 1 on the 27th so I will have 2 in diapers for a while. I didn't start cloth diapering him until he was a few months old, and it has only been very part time until recently, so I don't know much about newborn cloth diapering. I am partial to pocket diapers, but I'm thinking I want to try prefolds with our newest one in his younger months. What is a good-sized stash to have? How many prefolds and diapers in general would you ladies suggest to have on hand? TIA!

welcome to the board

I too loved pockets, esp when Emmy was younger, now I have a very ecclectic mix!

I also love prefolds, and used them a lot when Emmy was a newbie, and I'd recommend having 3 dozen preolds and 8-10 covers... the covers can be reused (unless they get soiled, obviously)

I didn't CD Susie at first either - too overwhelming for us with getting used to a newborn! But I would probably want to for a next one, and I've also heard 3 dozen prefolds and 8-10 covers is enough for full-time diapering.

If you also want to use newborn pockets, you could reduce the number of prefolds, but they are good to stuff in pockets once the baby has outgrown them as prefolds. When we started at about 2 months old, we probably had 20, maybe 25, pockets and AIOs, and no prefolds, and that was enough - we just washed every other day.

If you're budget conscious, I'm not sure I've seen a better regular-priced deal on new newborn prefolds than Cotton Babies. IIRC, they're $1 each with free shipping.

I started with newborn AIOs and then switched to OS pockets at 1 week. I have used fitteds and prefolds, too, but never full time. I do love them for at home, but I like pockets or AIOs or AI2s better for out and about.

How often do you want to wash? For a newborn, I would estimate 10-12 diapers per day, and then get as many prefolds for the number of days between washes (so if you want to wash every 3 days, I would get 36 prefolds, or maybe 40 to cover you while washing). Also, I would get a pretty fair number of covers. Probably 4-5 a day, I would think, so say 12-15 covers. The nice thing with prefolds is that you can't have TOO many They are great for lots of things, and you can stuff pockets with them when baby is bigger. Also, I know Thirsties Duo Wraps size 1 get pretty small, they worked on DS when he was a baby, and they would extend the life of the cover for longer than a sized wrap. Hope that helps!

I had 24 prefolds and 5 covers and we did just fine. I washed every other day. I did end up buying some pockets to use overnight since it was just easier.
