I have cloth diapered my 2 girls, but not when they were itty bitty. It just seemed they swam in the diapers and were uncomforable until they got a tad bigger.

DH and I are TTC and I am considering cloth diapering this time from the beginning.

In your opinion, what is the best cloth diaper for a newborn? My first daughter was 7'lb 10 oz and my second weighed 8 lb 9 oz at birth, so, I do not have tiny babies.

I am looking for something trim and snug.

The only thing that will for sure have a snug fit on any baby is a small folded flat. Second in line, preemie prefold for an itty bitty (under 8-9 lbs) or newborn prefold for a slightly larger newborn, folded and snappied or pinned. These are more work to fold but always have a perfectly custom fit.

Other diapers llke fitteds, pockets and AIOs may or may not be shaped appropriately for your baby. Many of the popular ones fit MOST babies well. They are a lot more convenient to put on as well, no work with folding etc.

My opinion is that snappied newborn prefolds offer the best fit with an acceptable amount of extra work. I used them on my DD and plan to use the same ones on the next baby (knock on wood). I used a variety of covers since different things fit best as she grew, although we got the most use out of the thirsties duo size 1s.

Prefolds and covers!!! I used the small size on my newborn. She was 5lb 9oz. It was huge and bulky, but totally did the job and the same size lasted for like 6 months.

I'm gonna have to disagree w/ above...they were no xtra work at all for us. The only xtra was putting a cover on top which takes like, 5 seconds. Once you get the hang of the fold that works for your baby you are golden.

I loved the thirsties duo wraps sz 1 for a newborn, also the xs thirsties. Both fit my teeny newborn.

I would use prefolds & covers on a newborn, definitely... was by far my favourite 'system' when Emmy was a newbie

Prefolds and covers, as stated above, but I also love some convenience diapers for when we are out and about or those nights I'm changing diapers with one eye open because I'm so tired. I love the fuzzibunz. ES Ron sized, the xs bumGenius, and newborn Sandys most of all. My favorite covers are thirsties. I actually like the sized best (because I really don't like rise snaps, especially on covers), but the duos are also good and give you a lot more bang for your buck.

Ps, the fb and the bg are really trim.

I'm going to go against the norm and say I'd rather use disposables than prefolds and covers. I tried, and it wasn't for us. It took too long and was a hassle. I don't like that they aren't stay dry either and I don't want to have to add yet another thing to make it stay dry.

Happy Heiny Mini's were awesome for us. Trim, no leaks, no blowouts and is truly as easy as a disposable. You stuff them ahead of time, not when you're fighting with a wiggly baby.

I've let someone use mine, but I'm getting them back for a possible third baby.
I did use other pockets, but none were as good as the Happy Heiny Mini's.

Hi Holly! I used prefolds for Abri starting when she was three weeks old and around 8-9 pounds. I got the infant size instead of newborn and it worked perfectly with her 0-3 month clothes. For easy night time changes we used fitteds that went up to 11 lbs. Using cloth on a newborn was a lot easier than I expected.

I didn't start cloth diapering immediately when my first was born, but plan to when #2 arrives. If you plan to invest in a set of newborn diapers, prefolds are the most affordable and flexible (they can be used as pocket inserts later) but fitted newborn diapers are a more convenient option. Assuming you already have cloth diapers left from your older children, this might be the best option for you.

A second option would be to look at one-size diapers. Like you mentioned, most one-size options don't fit a newborn well, but WAHMies and SoftBums Echo are good choices. Both will still look big on your baby, but they do provide a snug fit to contain runny newborn poop.

There's a good article on newborn cloth diapers on the website thinking-about-cloth-diapers dot com which compares fitted and one-size options.

I've just started my newborn stash, as I didn't start using cloth with my DS until he was older as well. I have equal parts infant prefolds to use with small covers and XS BumGenius AIOs for DH to use or for convenience while we're out of the house.
