What do your older relatives say? Especially if they "had" to use them?

One of Dh's aunt who is the age of my grandmother freaked out when she saw DS in a cloth diaper. She asked if we were doing it on purpose.

^^ haha that is so weird!!! Lol

Our parents/the grandparents were dubious at first and FIL even told me I would never last with it. Everyone was shocked by how easy it was to put on a prefold with a snappi, and how nice the PUL was (i.e. not rubber pants!)

My dad had a kid as a young hippie, my much older half brother, they used cloth (flats) and did babywearing and all that. He called my prefolds "fancy diapers" (my grovias and bottombumpers totally blew his mind lol) and made fun of me for using a poo spatula and gloves instead of my bare hands, I told him about sprayers and he called it "fussy". Not that he ever changes her but I did get him some pins once and he did a basically functional angel wing pinning job on a prefold, enough to convince me he was legit He is a big fan of the Maya wrap and also approves of our part time ECing

I havent had my baby boy just yet but our familes think Im crazy to deal with pee and poo and to wash them where I wash my clothes. They to think that its just a prefold and a pin and a dirty mess and so much more work. We are going with AIO pockets and I think its going to be a lot easier the diposies! I will show them!

My Grandpa looked at me like I had 3 heads when I told them I was going to be cd'ing. My mom laughed. No one was out right rude but told me I was crazy lol

AFter I had been doing it for awhile and they SAW the diapers they think it is the coolest thing ever!! LOL! They couldn't believe those were diapers. They have the old plastic pants, and pins stuck in their heads.

Now they show everyone who comes over or if we are at church my mom grabs me and my girls and has to lift up their dresses to show her friends lol

My parents are going to be thrilled when they hear we'll CD. They used them on us as babies, because they had to, and I think they'll appreciate that we're choosing this. (Especially since the diapers are so much better than they were 30 years ago.)

My grandma asked if we needed money to buy sposies She meant well and was not meaning to be insulting.

I just told her that it was not a money issue and she was fine with it. She was amazed when she saw what we were using and asks how it is going all the time. She asked recently if I was glad I switched and I said yes. She said it was pretty cool how far they had come. She had visions of the plastic pants and flats that she used back in the day. But I think she respects me for making a choice that is based enviornmentally and not necessarily for convenience (because most of my other cousins tend to avoid parenting their children at all, if possible...much less do something inconvenient).

^This was the reaction of my inlaws. My mom said it'd never last and "don't you know those things leak like crazy?" I think her mind has changed a little now that she sees they aren't the old plastic pants my grandma used.

My parents are really supportive- they tried cd'ing with a diaper service with each kid (3) and gave up so they were really skeptical. My mom has knit me soakers (cant really use them becuase they have too much acrylic.)--now I just have to rope her into knitting me some longies.

I think my inlaws thing I am crazy.

Dh's mom told us we wouldn't that we would give up. My mom was supportive and asked if I had a good washing routine (She used cloth with my little brother, and had a diaper service since the she was unsure if the septic field could handle it otherwise, She always says she would have done it with my other brother and I if she could have). Both my grandmothers barely batted an eye. My aunt had used cloth years ago too and her and my grandmother made them, so it wasn't anything new. Dh's grandma hasn't said anything about it. Though everyone is amazed at how far CDing has come in 18 years.

My mom just keeps making snide remarks about how its so hard for N to roll over, and to sit because of all the bulk. It's something that has me on edge today, even though it's the same nasty comment everyday. Oh, and the 'but she's so huuuuungry' comment too (b/c I breastfeed, which she told me 'not to make a habit of' )

Both my mom and my IL's have been really supportive. My grandma is super cool with it too, she always tells me that's what they did back then, and how she's made diapers (basically flannel flats) for charities that donate them to 3rd world countries. Of course, they all know that if I'm gonna do something, I'm just gonna go ahead and do it and nothing they say will deter me

My aunt was SOOOO excited when I showed her and wished the hybrids/pockets/etc had been around when her daughter was a baby. She grabbed them and was running around showing everyone "how cool and cute" they are lol.

My boyfriends family thinks its disgusting

My Mom cloth diapered 6 kids and only used disposables on her 7th because my other brother got sick and she spent a lot of time with him in the hospital. When my older sister had her baby, she won 6 months of a diaper service so at 12, I used cloth diapers on my nephew. No one really thought much more about it until I started using them. At first, my mom was like "why would you do such a thing?" When I explained that my babies were allergic to the disposable diapers she just said "oh, yah, that's why I used cloth with all of you" and that was that. She hasn't ever said anything more about it. I don't think she even remembers that I use cloth. They don't live near us and I have yet to take the baby for a visit.
My in-laws are half senile. I don't think they would even notice. They haven't so far, so haven't said anything.

I really just don't understand the gross comment. The poop is CONTAINED! Which says a lot cause with sposies it's NOT! I remember visiting my friend for the first time with Naomi and her walking through the door, holding it for her husband who was holding their 2 yo at arms reach saying move, move, move cause she had a poosplosion in the car. She just keeps saying how gross diapers are, but I've never had that issue. Then I'll tell her we do cloth and she says that's gotta be 10'x worse cause of dealing with the poop. But, it's soooo different when you get poop on your hands cause you are spraying it clean vs. getting poop on your hands in public cause your wiggle worm pooped all over everything and you are changing them in the trunk of your car just to be sure not to spread it further. Yeah, that's way more gross.......

ramble over. ignore typos, grammatical errors and anything that makes me appear to be a babbling idiot.

I've not had poop leak yet either. Possibly newborn poo which I'm expecting once or twice, but not toddler poo!

My mom made some comment about how they will be gross to use, but then she looked up a pattern to make some, so she's just a strange lady. I don't think my dad gives two craps (haha) what I put on my kids, and I don't know DH's mom&dad at all, so if they ever met the children I think that would be the least of their worries.

I think it was Cara who responded to a friend on FB though that said something along the lines of "but then the poop and pee ends up in your washer!" and Cara said "good thing it's a WASHING machine!" haha

Most of my relatives know me well enough to know how frugal I am. As soon as I explained that the choice to go cloth was in an effort to save money, nobody batted an eye. My maternal grandmother was one of those that expected to see pins and plastic pants, so she was pleasantly surprised to see that wasn't the case. I have an aunt who was thrilled when she heard I was using cloth; she used it with her kids for the same reason. She loves seeing pictures of the "modern" cloth.

Two of DH's siblings (the only relatives he has) don't get it. They've offered to buy us "real" diapers. DH's other brother was sort of interested in trying cloth, but when I offered to ship him some to try out, he weanied out. Now that they're expecting they're second baby, I'm thinking of buying some Sunbabies for him to try.

My mom thought we were nuts. Now many, many months later, she mentioned one day she was proud of me for sticking to it. I was surprised, but I honestly never really cared about her or anyone else's opinion one way or another. But it is nice to hear of course

I'm not even sure if either of my granmothers know we are using cloth. If they do, they haven't said anything to us one way or another.

My MIL was pretty supportive. She apparently used cloth for at least a little while with her kids. I've also gotten my SIL into using cloth for her youngest and my MIL sat and listened bc she wanted to learn as well while I explained everything and answered questions to my SIL...which wasn't a huge surprise bc my MIL's a pretty big hippy
