Lye, chamber lye, ashes and urine for washing laundry

Apparently people in the olden days used to save urine, let it get really rank and ammonia-y, then use it for housecleaning, laundry, and all sorts of things.

Perhaps all those soggy night diapers are going to waste we could bottle that stuff and sell it, ladies!!!!

LOL, you can also use it to whiten leather when you're processessing the hide. I read that in a book, have not personally tried it!!

I remember being a kid touring Pompeii, and being thoroughly disgusted when they showed us the building with a raised "pool" in the center and explained that that was where the public urinals were dumped and used to bleach cottons. There were notches along the raised wall that were seats where women sat and used their feet to agitate. We've come a long way!! That's true HE

I remember reading something about this in the Earths Children series.. actually, I think one of the methods for tanning (?) the hides was to use urine

Instead of dumping M's pee from the little pink potty down the toilet, I should be saving it. And hand painting pretty labels for the bottles. Maybe something like, "Hand Crafted Artisinal Ammonia - from pure organic human baby urine - ALL NATURAL"

Okay time for bed lol

Yep, if people still did it, I'd be rich. Of course, back then you had to have a "pot" to put the urine in to sell it. With my luck, I'd be one of those that are so poor "I don't have a pot to piss in".

OMG...my day started off rough...but this thread alone made it better. Off to save some nighttime urine for tanning DH's hide

What? Not that kind of hide? Darn, he is in the dog house and it sounded fun
