Liners go against the baby's skin. There are disposable liners and reusable cloth liners. Some people use them to protect diapers from getting stained by poop or getting stained/repelling from diaper creams that aren't cloth safe. Also, when using fitteds or other natural materials, a fleece liner can help mimic the stay-dry feeling of synthetic fabrics by wicking away some of the moisture. You don't need liners though, but you may find that you need or want them. When I needed to use diaper cream that wasn't cloth safe, I just cut up some receiving blankets to act as a liner and keep the diapers safe.

What she said

I typically think of 2 different types of liners....flushable ones that I've used when DD's poo has been messier than normal

and fleece liners that I've used with fitteds or other non-stay dry diapers, to make them feel less wet against her skin.

the disposable liners can be a godsend when they are having particularly nasty poop.... tip the liner & poop into the toilet.. doesn't get much easier than that

cloth liners (which can be made of microfleece, microsuede) act as a stay dry barrier, and can also be good for when babies are on medications etc that can cause the poop to stain...

They got ya covered.

We use microfleece liners (not to be confused with microfiber, which can not lay against the skin) because Liam gets nasty rashes from wetness. And wetness sits on natural fabrics (bamboo, hemp, cotton) without pulling it away from the skin. So I think that is why a lot of people use the microfleece ones. And those double duty for nasty poo and creams because they are easy to spray off and just go in the regular laundry so I don't have to worry about the cream aspect.

We just hit up the fabric store and buy 1/2 yard of microfleece and chop it up to size. Easy and cheap.
