Hi,
My name is Becky Im due the first week of May, and we are going to CD. Im about to buy my begining stash but I want to make sure I get the right amount.

If I buy 4 lil joeys NB and 6 small fuzzibunz do you think that would be a good number to get through the first 3 months at least and then i will add 6 more smalls or 6 onesize. Or do you think I need more than 4 NB?

Also we are having a son and we are having him circ'd. Should we wait on starting the cloth until that heals or not? Anyone have experience with that?

Thanks.

Hi Becky!

For full time cloth diapering, you need the number of diapers you will put in each wash load, plus as many diapers as you will need to last until the wash load is clean and dry. Newborns go through 12-18 diapers a day. If you want to go 2 days between wash cycles, you need 24-36 diapers. 24-36 is generally the recommended number for full time cloth diapering a newborn.

The AIOs and pockets are some of the more expensive options, but nice to have some for convenience. Newborn prefolds are very inexpensive in comparison, you have to learn how to put them on but they are not difficult once you get the hang of it, and they are a great way to round out your stash.

Hope that helps and please stick around and ask questions!

With colton I had 2 lil joeys, 24 prefolds, 6 fitteds and like 5 covers--I washed about every day just to stay ahead.

I agree, that you will probably want more diapers. I would say about 20 and be OK with washing them everynight ( I am OK with that, others aren't). And I am not too sure newborn will get you by for three months. From what I have gathered from others and my own experience, my son was out of newborns in about 4-8 weeks, definitely not to the three month mark. My daughter was smaller and probably could have (we weren't CDing then).

But I would say on average, your newborn stash should be something economical and large in number since it is short lived but you go through a lot of diapers a day. If you don't mind a slightly loose fit then you could be ok jumping into size small prefolds and covers and those would definitely last you past 3 months.

I had my baby 6 months ago and we have been cdi'ing since birth..if you are doing prefolds or fitted's with covers I'd recommend at least 24 maybe 36 if youre washig every other day..I found I needed at least 6 covers for this amt of diapers..especially with the explosive newborn poo..you will most likely have a few dirty covers...as far as lil joeys..I had 6 of them and dried them in my dryer and the pul actually melted so I'd try line drying them or set them to low heat..They also do have the 3 step rise system and claim to be ok for babies up to 12 lbs but I bet you could go longer with them.

I would get 12-24 prefold and 6-8 concers to add to your NB stash. Newborn poop a TON! I changed 16 diapers a day when my son was a newbie. It is unlikely that the NB will last 3 months, My boy fit in OS diapers as soon as his cord stump fell off at 2 weeks. I think you could do ok with 24 OS diapers after the NB stage.

I still prefer prefold/flats and covers!

thanks, I dont know why I read somewhere that 10-12 would be enough diapers after more reading i realize 24 is a more realistic number.

Most people swear by prefolds and covers and I'm sure they work for many people but we just didn't like them. With DS1 we quickly moved into one size pockets and with DS2 we just used disposables. I actually spent $140 on my newborn stash (18 newborn prefolds, 9 infant prefolds, 6 covers, 2 snappies, and maybe a few other odds and ends). I guess it would have worked out if we had of liked the system and used it for all three kids, but we didn't. Anyway, I've sold or given away most of that and I convinced my friend to add newborn pockets to her WAHM diaper store (Cloth by Kim). I think they are about $8 a piece without inserts and I bought 12. I have a newborn inserts from my one size diapers, so I'm going to use those. I also got 4 used lil joeys, one Thirsties size one, and one small Kawaii. I'm thinking that will do for us since I'll be washing every night. I'll have two in diapers and the pail fills up fast. Did I answer you're question? Ummmm not quite sure, but yes, you're going to need more diapers if you want to CD full time. You can always build as you go once you find out what you like too.

thanks Diana, I am also not that enthusiastic about prefolds, so I really like pockets, and I would be okay with some AIO.

After a lot of discussion with DH I think we will be starting out with sposies and slowly building our stash, maybe by time we are on #2 we will have enough to start FT right off the bat but for now, we are just going to have to buy a little at a time when we find good deals and try a few here and there to see what we like

I suggest buying a couple prefolds and a cover just to try it. Just as I suggest buying one of each kind you are interested in. Prefold seem intimidating but watch a couple youtube videos on how to put them on and you will become a pro. I love them since they are the only diaper I have used without leaks. If you still arent' convinced, I suggest looking at fitted diapers (prefolds sewn into a diaper shape.). The ones I am looking at are at Green Mountain Diapers and are called Workhorses. At $5 a piece, you just snap them on, put on a cover and you are done. If you can sew, you can make your own fitteds, something I am doing now.

I'm willing to attempt prefolds eventually but I've had such a hard time with them before (with a friends baby) that the thought of doing them right away overwhelms me, i am much more comfortable with the pockets. Right now Im seriously considering sunbaby, they seem to have good reviews and are much more affordable than a big brand, but who knows I will probably still change my mind a million times haha.

I agree with all the other ladies. Two dozen is probably the minimum you want for a newborn. Some newborns poop every hour, so you could change upwards of 18+ diapers per day, then you need some for when you are washing.

I would also encourage you to get at least a few prefolds...if nothing more than to use them coverless if your babe has a diaper rash. Sometimes the PUL/TPU can be hard for their skin to breath if they have a rash, and using natural fibers can help. If you don't want to go the prefold route, you could also find a few all natural fiber fitteds. They are easier to use b/c they are shaped more like a "regular" diaper. Fitteds generally need a cover, though.

Good luck and congratulations!!

I guess it's just $6.50 and then $1 more for an insert. Not a bad deal. And if you are planning other kids, it's even better. She does the best she can to keep shipping low, too.

Oh, and the newborn non-prefold lovers are few on this board, but I agree, it's not just about ease and getting the hang of them, it's also keeping the baby feeling dry. This is very important to DH and to me to an extent, so that's why we use mainly pockets.

welcome to the board I'm Emma (28), Mummy to Gaby & Emersyn.

I agree with everyone else - to full time CD, you would realistically need at least 2 dozen diapers... I think 3 dozen seems to be the standard recommendation, amongst the ladies here - and if you talk to CD manufacturers, etc.

If *I* was going to CD a baby again, I would use prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, and I cannot explain WHY I'm so fond of prefolds for that stage - I just am, lol.

I *personally* had a lot of luck with the small FuzziBunz perfect size, for about 2-6mo, and I now use the medium's (Emersyn is 22mo)....

I think it's probably a good idea to have a mixed stash to start with, so you can find what works & what doesn't work for your baby - because not all diapers, suit ALL babies... which is a pain, and I always feel for those women (incl. myself) who buy a whole stash of ONE brand, only to find out those diapers don't really suit, and they end up having to buy more, OR get put off CD'ing altogether.

Kawaii and Sunbaby are widely used OSFA pocket diapers - and they are nice and cheap, I love Sunbaby - more than I love my FuzziBunz....

BumGenius is a very popular brand on here (and in the CD community in general), as is FuzziBunz.

An option is to buy pre-loved diapers, before you splash out and buy a bulk number of a diaper... Most of my CD's are preloved and I have had no issues with them. I do understand that that's not an option for everyone though
