Lately once in a while DD has been smelling like ammonia when I go to change her diaper, especially in the morning. Is this a sign that I need to strip my diapers? At first I got all worried (first time mom here ) and thought maybe it was a health concern. DH just thought it was normal esp. in the mornings when she's had the diaper on for a while, but now I wonder if it is because of the diapers.

diapers should not smell like ammonia. That means they aren't getting clean ad need more detergent or a good bleaching. We use Tide.

I agree with Alice. They aren't getting clean enough. Try using more detergent, or a different detergent (not sure what kind of detergents you have over there), and if that still doesn't work then you may need to bleach them.

What is your wash routine?

i would try using more detergent - it's usually the quick fix for stink, if you catch it early!

We have a "Baby cycle" on our front loader that rinses cold, washes at 60 degrees Celsius (I think this would be considered "Hot" even though we do have a 95 degree setting) and then rinses again. TBH DH puts the diapers in and idk how much detergent he uses. I told him not to use too much though, because I read that was bad for build up, so maybe he puts in too little, like you said. We also switched detergents recently, so maybe that's the problem.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

A lot of ppl here have used more detergent and gotten good results..but in my case it was a detergent buildup..my diapers would get stinkier and stinkier the more I washed them..I finally did a good washing with my normal amt of detergent..followed by a full hot was with dawn dish soap then 2 more hot washes no detergent..When my diapers arent clean they smell more like barnyard not ammonia..it could be either of those issues..I would try both remedies and see which one works..I finally got my diapers to stop stinking and havent had the stink issue and havent increased my detergent at all..if all else fails..I know a lot of ppl bleach their diapers
