Hi all my name is Amber momma to 3 boys, T 8, Z almost 6 and S 3mos born at 35wks., engaged to my best friend Justin, we have been toget for 6 1/2 yrs and engaged for 3yrs. I am finally getting to cd and have some questions if you ladies don't mnd. I bought PF and covers and a couple fitted to try out. I am fine with pf and covers for now but DF refuses to try them after i showed him how to use them, so I ordered 2 sunbaby pockets for him to try out (should be here today or tomorrow!) So here are my questions...

1. Whats a good laundry soap to use? I have read tide works well, but I am terribly allergic to it.

2. What are some good inexpensive OS pocket diapers? Do I have to prep pockets like i do pf?

3. Good night time diaper?

4. Any good home made wipe solutions? We have 3 more packs of sposie wipes and then I want to make my own.

5. How many diapers will I need a day, I can wash daily at first while i build my stash if need be?

S is 3mos and about 9 1/2 lbs, he is bf and ff, if any of that makes a difference.

TIA for reading and sorry for any typos I am nursing and using my phone lol.

Hi and welcome!!!!

1. Whats a good laundry soap to use? I have read tide works well, but I am terribly allergic to it.

Any detergent that works on your normal laundry and you are not allergic to, as long as it doesn't contain built-in fabric softeners, is fine! I have had rashes from original Tide and I don't use it, but have had success with Tide free & gentle. Mainstream detergents work better for most people but some people do successfully use special "CD safe" brands.

2. What are some good inexpensive OS pocket diapers? Do I have to prep pockets like i do pf?

You don't have to prep pockets. You may have to prep the inserts if they are cotton, hemp, or bamboo.

3. Good night time diaper?

An absorbent fitted diaper with a breathable wool, fleece, and/or nylon cover. A versatile and affordable option is a Greenchild Creations (on Etsy) fitted which you could stuff with a prefold, cover with a pull on nylon cover like Bummis whisper pants or Dappi nylon ($5-6) and fleece pjs or pants.

4. Any good home made wipe solutions? We have 3 more packs of sposie wipes and then I want to make my own.

We just use plain water in a spray bottle and spray the bottom directly.

5. How many diapers will I need a day, I can wash daily at first while i build my stash if need be?

It depends a lot on the baby!!! And on how long your wash routine takes. I have never seen anyone say they got by with under 18 diapers with a baby under 6 months old, in full time cloth. With older toddlers you can do less.

S is 3mos and about 9 1/2 lbs, he is bf and ff, if any of that makes a difference.

TIA for reading and sorry for any typos I am nursing and using my phone lol.

I am too

I have heard some bad CD washing reviews on All F&C but a few good ones too, esp the military version. If you have good water (not too hard and mineral-y) it should be fine. If it does build up, you can strip your diapers and switch brands. Check out the CD 101 diaper laundry thread in the stickies.

Sunbaby is pretty popular as well. I'd guess its a small step down from Alva, but decent.

I only have one, and I bought it used. I can't speak much to the different series, but I really do like the one I have. I think there are some Facebook groups about Alva that might help more.

I have 2 Sunbaby diapers and they're the first pockets I reach for. They're cute and fit my daughter well and are easy to stuff with her required absorbency (one bamboo and one hemp insert). I usually reach for prefolds before the pockets, especially during naps, but if we're going out, I like my Sunbaby diapers.

I used All F+C for a bit towards the beginning of our cloth diapering and it was fine for us. Then I found Arm and Hammer Essentials Free (in the green bottle) and we used that for probably 6 months or so, until she was eating solids more and pooping for real, which was probably when she was about 1 year old. Then we switched to Tide which solved the stink issues we got. But we're fortunate not to have skin sensitivities to deal with.

Question to add if you don't mind... The Tide you speak of, is it HE? I'm worried about my HE washing machine having issues but most people use them now right?

Btw, I am totally new to this and haven't had my baby yet so I have no review but I did order a stash of the SunBabies for after the newborn stage (prefolds & fitteds, bought used here, for the newborn time). I know what you mean about ALVA being a little tricky. I might have ordered them instead but the site and diapers styles were too much when confused enough! lol Btw, here is a link for making baby wipes/make-up removers out of papertowels. I figure I'll use this recipe only on cloth wipes and adjust absorbancy as needed. Here it is:
