I just got a notice from the water utility that we were in water conservation/drought mode now, then suddenly I noticed my clothes aren't clean, my dishes aren't clean, and I smell salty after I shower. The water supply comes from surface and shallow groundwater sources when we are not in drought but I think they go to deeper groundwater and/or sources requiring heavy treatment when we are in drought. (We are North/Central California coast and use local/county sources for the city water, no Sierra snowmelt water for us.) I left a load of baby clothes and kitchen towels in the dryer overnight and they weren't clean enough and the whole dryer smelled a bit mildewy, so I wiped it down with a clorox wipe (so glad I bought these, they are just for emergencies such as this!!) And it was fine after that. So my new CD wash routine is:
4 (!!) Scoops oxo brite powder in drum (was 2-3)
7gen detergent to Line 4 (was line 3)
7gen fabric softener, diluted by half
Sanitary cycle/Extra Hot (was Heavy Duty/Hot)
Still doing prewash, extra rinse, extended spin and ActivFresh/silver ions.
My diapers just smell like our water... a bit salty. Nothing I can do about that but I'm glad I was able to head this one off at the pass. I hate the crazy fluctuations in water quality we get.
That sounds so crazy and difficult to deal with!!! I have extra hard water, but at least I have it all the time and it's consistent and easy to plan for. I think. I've yet to be here for a flood, though.

eek!! Ours is always consistently really hard too, no changes there. The most we get, is after a heavier rain or a snow melt our water stinks. Not sure why, this just started in 2009. DH says he can't smell it????? It smells like a really wet late fall day, decomposing leaves, but without the fresh air. At least it doesn't affect the wash.
^^ LOL Anne I think I have a really sensitive nose too. Like all the clothing we got out of storage STINKS to me like musty old cardboard and I have to wash it all but no one else seems to think it's that bad. And I think our new bathroom has a weird smell that became noticeable after the new paint smell wore off, like grungy pipes maybe, and I keep cleaning various things to fix it but the only thing that has touched it so far is a charcoal bamboo odor absorber/air freshener I got!
