I was thinking about what I have learned about CDing and what I wish I could go back and tell myself.

1. In your California hard water and HE FLer, bleach and the sanitize cycle will be your friend. This is fine for almost all diapers but avoid bamboo velour and bamboo terry unless you are okay with them becoming very dense and basically sherpa over time.

2. M grows REALLY FAST and big and any diaper with versatility in the sizing will be better for you. Flats, prefolds, prefitteds and pinnable OS fitteds (once you learn to pin) will work the best and the longest.

3. It is tough to beat a trifolded prefold in a nice aplix cover like a Flip for convenience diapering. Any AIO with tongue style soaker or snaps will still be "too hard" for grandma and she will just insist on using sposies anyway, so don't bother catering to her! (Maybe aplix pockets would have been a better choice for her... I don't know)

Overall I have a great stash put away for #2 and am excited to use it again... but I do think I wasted a lot of time and money on fancy looking stuff that ended up not working as well for me as the old fashioned basics! It was fun though

1. skip newborn size diapers, my babies are too big at birth for them.

2. dont get too much in size small either because they will be outgrown in less than 3 mo. Load up on size medium because they get worn from about 3mo until potty (at least with my son).

3. flats are awesome! prefolds get outgrown too fast for me but flats last forever, you just might have to add extras as they get bigger. they open large and wash so well.

4. cloth wipes are so much easier when you use cloth diapers.

5. HE washers suck!

-Prefolds are versatile, quick, convenient, easy and cheap.

-AIOs will take FOREVER to dry, you'll never use them.

-Don't feel bad if you pack disposables for trips to Grandma's. Everyone will survive.
