when using pocket diapers do you have to change the pocket diaper after each diaper change or can you reuse it and just put a different insert in? I don't quite understand them. if you do have to change the diaper after each diaper change would it just be easier to do a cover with either a prefold or insert in the cover? Or use an AlO? As far as cost go it doesn't sound like pockets are cheaper than AIO when you factor in the diaper and insert cost..

What are your fav brands that are cost effective for prefolds, covers & pockets?

I would like different takes on this situation if the ladies could help me out please I would really appreciate it!

you have to change the whole thing, because the insert is inside the pocket the lining gets soiled when the baby pees or poops

I was a nanny for a family who used pockets, but they were already stuffed for me. They were just as easy as disposables that way, but I don't know about the laundry aspect.

For our daughter we chose prefolds and covers, mostly because of the cost. I have absolutely no regrets. Sometimes we trifold and just lay them in the covers, other times I Snappi the prefold. I like that I can use the prefolds without a cover if I want to keep her drier and change as soon as she is wet. I think they are easy to wash and easy to use.

We have some Green Mountain Diaper prefolds and some from Nicki's Diapers and I honestly don't notice a difference... Nicki's Diapers are cheaper and I will probably go with those in the future. For covers, we had some Thirsties in newborn size but I got a lot of leaks... most people love them but they weren't the best for us. Otherwise we use custom WAHM covers with PUL on the inside and decorative fabric on the outside... I love them but the shop is closed now so I don't know what I will do if I want to order more.

Because of money I haven't tried many different things, but I haven't really been tempted to anyway.

lurking here but I thought I would chime in. I'm researching CD options for my twins due in July

I think the biggest plus with inserts is being able to change absorbency and types of inserts. With an AIO I don't think it's best to use a doubler or insert or prefold to add absorbency unless it has the snaps for them. But I could be wrong.

I am researching doing prefrolds and covers while newborn since there is a chance of small babies if they come too early and then moving to a few different types of AIO & pockets until I find something I like. Thats just my rough idea now, that could change with more research. We cannot afford to sposie twins exclusively, no way.

For cost effective options, I would check out Imagine prefolds with Prorap covers, or the Econobum system. For pockets, some go with Alva for lowest cost, but ethically I think Sunbaby or Assunta are better and they are also very cheap.

Also, look for used package deals!!! Often mamas want to unload a whole stash at once and you can get amazing prices. Search locally (craigslist, freecycle, consignment, yard sales) as well as Spots Corner (on Hyenacart) and Diaperswappers FSOT forum. FFS means free for shipping (i.e. you just pay shipping costs) and if you are in need, FFS deals are great. Put them through a bleach wash and several hot rinses and they will be clean as a whistle good luck!!!

Congrats on your twins! I wish you luck and I hope you bake them as long as possible
