I have called my diaper lady a million times and I am just fed up! Maybe you girls can help.

I have been CD'ing for about 5 months and started to have issues about 2 months ago with stink and leaking...my diaper lady told me to stop using vinegar and baking soda so I did. Then I called her and she recommended using the calgon stuff since I have hard water and use it every two weeks. They worked great after that but it was short lived. She told me to keep it simple so all i do is a cold pre-wash and then wash with Purex free and clear and thats it. My bum genuis have been HORRIBLE! They leak after like 15 minutes and all my diapers stink! I am at a loss!!! PLEASE HELP I AM READY TO QUIT!

I think you should strip your diapers.

What I did:
  • cold prewash
  • Start hot wash - add a couple squirts of Dawn and 3 scoops of OxyClean.
  • Leave the lid up so that the washer will agitate the diapers, but won't drain.
  • Let them soak until the water starts to cool - at least 2 hours.
  • I reset the washer dial so the wash agitated again, but I closed the lid and let it finish.
  • Start another hot wash - no soap.
  • Watch for bubbles. Bubbles means that you have detergent build up.
  • If there are bubbles... start another hot wash - no soap.
  • Repeat until there are no bubbles.
I've only done this once in the almost 6mo I've been CDing, and that was about 2mo into it. Since then we've reduced the amount of Purex we use per load and I do an occassional load with Dawn and 1 scoop of Oxy. We always do an extra rinse after the hot wash. I occassionally do an extra hot wash just to watch for bubbles, but so far it looks like we're keeping down the detergent buildup.

Good luck to you.

Try stripping them in the top basket of your dishwasher (no detergent of course!) the hot hot water might help. Good luck to you. I have hard hard water and finally had to sell my BGs , they just could not rinse clean enough - unless I wanted to bleach every week I could not keep the funky smell away. Too bad they were sooo cute. Cottonbabies suggests up to 1/4 cup bleach in the hot wash to kill the bacteria that thrives in the mineral and detergent buildup they are prone to, that's what makes them smell. You are talking about the AIOs right? One of the sites I buy diapers actually said they were NOT recommended for hard water becasue of this issue, but I didn't listen. Maybe you will have better luck. The bleach did work for me, i just didn't want to be bleaching my dipes every week, shortens their life.

strip them and stop using purex would be my suggestion. free & clears seem to always cause problems a few months down the line after using them. also if you have hard water (i do too and UGH), then you have to find what works for you.

im finding that using a capful of bleach in the hot wash after the washer fills with the water, is working ebst. im using dawn and vinegar. and that's it.

i was going to suggest not using the purex any more too. i had the same problem with my bg's and i switched to dawn all the time and everything's been good. i hope this works for you! let us know!

Yup, sounds like you need to strip them.

(Not everyone with hard water has trouble with free and clears - I've used various free and clear brands the entire time I've cd'd which is birth to potty training for the older two and 16 months so far for the little one... but you definitely should try a different detergent after you've stripped them since the Purex isn't working for you.)

Your BG's leak after 15 minutes?? Did they come with inserts, are the dipes too small, too big?

I add Tea Tree Oil to my last rinse, it's smells good and is antibacterial as well. Give this a try before you put your babe in disposeables?
