Being a Social Work intern is a thankless job most days, but today I just had a really good day, and since they are rare I figured I would share I graduate in 8 days. So I stopped by the department and asked what my ACAT score is which is what compares us to other Social Workers in the nation. I scored the highest in my class in the 89th percentile, so I will be given a special award and will have a special cord to walk with at graduation.
So obviously I am over the moon because I have missed out on a lot of things in college because I choose my son over beer and parties and spent my free time studying.
So this evening I went in for my last day of my internship. Thank you God because management have been miserable, and have treated me horribly. They act like I don't know what I am doing, and I am incapable of working with clients, they still refer to me as the "intern" mind you the clinicians love me and hold me in high regard.
Well today in one of my sessions one of my clients became deathly ill, and my medical intervention quite possibly saved this kids life. ( I use to be an EMT) We are still waiting on test results to confirm the diagnosis from the local hospital but the EMTs told me that if we had delayed getting her treatment any longer she would not have made it.
However my boss feels that it wasn't medically necessary to call 911 or to provide any medical intervention and the client is just faking it. I'm sorry but some health concerns you can't fake. So tomorrow I will have to contact the university, and report her to the national ethics board. So when I go in tomorrow they will probably fire me, which is fine since today is my last day
You were using your best judgment - both based on being a social worker and a former EMT. You made the right call. It does not matter what your boss thinks or says you did or didnt do - you saved his life. Good for you!!! And yay for graduation!
