Firstly, I think of something that would mean something to me, as it will be on my body for the rest of my life. Also there are tons of fantastic websites that showcase tattoos of all styles, maybe just browsing through could give you some ideas.

Each one of my tattoos has a meaning behind them. I have a rose on my leg to represent my momma, then I have a fairy on my back that was custom drawn by a military wife I know that represents my belief in fairies. Not to mention that I was a big gamer many years ago. The next 3 that I am getting are going to have a special meaning as well to represent my family.
We have looked a lot for celtic knotwork to find DH's stuff. He has what I believe is called the eternity knot and/or the warrior knot as an armband. I would like that on my wrist someday. I'll just take DH with me for reference.
My tattoo is a reproduction of one of my favorite pieces of art. It has always been one of my favorites and many years ago when the internet was still pretty new I had an avatar made up of her (The Bride by Boris Vallejo) that I used. She also happens to be one of my DH's favorite pieces of art and the artist created it the year he was born. There are many other representations she means to me, but that is how I picked my piece.
