My doc said I could have the quad screen blood draw at my next appointment if I want it. She wants me to have a level II ultrasound at 19 weeks for my anatomy scan, but she wants me to have it done at the hospital. It's the same u/s machine they use for the NT scan (but obviously it'll be out of the 9-13 week window typical of the NT scan). She said the one at the hospital is just more specialized or something. And that the combo of the bloodwork plus the ultrasound is a good indicator of potential abnormalities. But then I heard that the quad screen has a high false positive rate. Is that just with the bloodwork only?? I don't want to be worrying the rest of my pregnancy if it's nothing, so I may not get it done. But I'm having the u/s at the hospital regardless (January 15th! eek!).

If you've had the quad test done, was it always with the level II ultrasound? The blood draw would be in December, and then the ultrasound 3 weeks later.

I talked to the nurse today about it. She said the false positive rate is high usually because they don't have an accurate due date and if the blood is drawn out of the "window period" chances are the results are not as reliable. If you get a positive result, then they recommend the level II ultrasound. I'll be getting that anyways, so we'll see.

My doctor gave me this little chart thing that says a combined serum screen and ultrasound detects about 85% of problems. I don't know if that is helpful info or if you already knew that.. but at least if everything comes back good than you can feel pretty confident that things will be normal .

I get the level II ultrasounds because I have lots of pregnancy related issues.. they are cool! The pictures are ALOT clearer, and they usually have a nice big screen you can look at while they are doing it. I much prefer those to the ones in the doctor's office.

I didn't know about the percentage! Yay! Yeah, I'm excited to have a clear ultrasound. Although I thought my regular one at 18 weeks last time was pretty cool too! Hubby doesn't want to know the gender, so it's going to be very hard not to find out especially if the picture is much clearer!! Maybe I just won't say anything if I see something.....
