I am usually a really generally happy person who has never really suffered from depression except once after the birth of my second son.

But I have noticed these last couple weeks, I have just been really sad and depressed and thinking about things that tick me off, and I harp on it in my head over and over. I cry almost everyday, i want to shut out people in my life that cause me strife that I could usually just brush off and keep moving forward. Family mostly that you can't shut out morally.

My morning sickness is getting increasingly worse, and i am starting to wonder if the stress and depression isn't causing it. I lost 50lbs RIGHT before I got pregnant and my body shape has changed so drastically that it makes me cry, even though I know it isn't rational. I worked so hard to get a body I was comfortable in, I wasn't trying to get pregnant, and now it is all going to hell.

Today, I had some pretty dark thoughts and they really freaked me out. It was a fleeting moment and as soon as I knew I was thinking it, I mentally smacked myself.

Is depression a symptom of pregnancy? Can it be? This has never happened to me before.

I'm usually easy going and humorous. It is kind of freaking me out,

First of all HUGS Tania! I still ya even tho your a steelers fan lol.

Secondly ive had some down days too. And Im normally also a pretty happy person. I also lost 45 pounds pre baby and I gained 14 of that back already! Which is kinda a downer to me also. And ive been so tired...not sick...just exhausted all the time. My normal routine has been gone for months cause of my exhaustion combined with money stresses and winter blues its all kinda making me pretty darn sad too. I soooo get it! If its not a normal pregnancy symptom well at least you arent alone.

Depression can ABSOLUTELY be part of pregnancy. I get it to some degree with each one of mine. With my first son, I was on zoloft because it was so bad. I managed to hold out until the last week with my second son, and then just gave in to the crying for the last week. This time, I felt it coming on even sooner, but it has gotten better in the last week, so hopefully I can avoid meds this time as well. Talk to your doctor - it is "normal" but you may decide it needs treatment of some sort, either meds or counseling, or closer follow up. HUGS!

Depression can be caused by pregnancy! I had it BAAAAAD when I was pregnant with my son. It was so bad that I couldn't hardly get out of bed . There are sooo many hormones raging right now, that honestly, it could be completely caused by the huge shift in hormones and not a permanent thing. I also ended up getting some pretty rough postpartum after that pregnancy, so it is something to prepare yourself for.

If it is getting to be too much, talk to your doctor. I was put on a low dose anti-depressant while pregnant and then continued on it after the birth to help with the post partum. It really did help alot. I know there are a lot of considerations when taking a medication while pregnant, but sometimes it really is necessary and my son was just fine!

And remember, this is really common. A lot more common that many women want to admit so you are definitely NOT alone. Feel free to vent whenever you need

I think it's very normal, I think some of those dark thoughts pass through everyone's minds! Good luck and look to your boys and hubby for support if they know you are down in the dumps, they will make an effort to cheer you up(men are really sh*tty mind readers LOL) sometimes just saying things out loud make you feel better!! Hugs to you mama! Always feel free to vent here too!!

You girls are so nice you make me cry LOL I am just bawling from reading all the support. My husband is a really good man but he is not good at the talking thing. He will just buy me stuff (chocolate) and hope it works.

It seems I have a lot of symptoms you ladies do too. Getting out of bed and so forth. I just lay down and read all day. I have gone through 3 books in 4 days. The smallest things I do everyday now seem like the biggest chore. Making dinner...running to the store...showering (i assure you I shower).

It is pretty bad and I have a checkup with my OB tomorrow morning and I am going to talk to him about it. I don't really want medication, but will take it if it will stop this hole I seem to be sinking into. Maybe I can see a therapist or something, even though the stuff I'm depressed about I'm fairly certain I am just blowing out of porportion.

I am relieved to know this is a symptom of pregnancy and I didn't just wake up one day and decide to go crazy. Because, it really, really, isn't me.

Hang in there, sweetie. I can't really say much more than what's already been said, except that I'm right there with you. It's hard, but we're all here to support each other. I've dealt with depression my whole adult life, and the hormones definitely add to it. I'm seeing a psychologist once every 2 weeks to help me deal with it, because I'm not interested in antidepressants either. Sometimes just having an objective 3rd party to talk things out with really does help. Definitely talk to your OB today, and get the help you need.
