I hate how people make gender such a big deal. I was prepared for all kinds of negative things if we found out we were having our third boy. My MIL made a couple nasty comments before we knew and it really hurt.
We truly wanted another baby to join our family, boy or girl. But the way people were making it out to be was that MY family would somehow be incomplete without a girl. I openly disagreed and said my family would be complete when we had the children we wanted to have in it, no matter gender or anything else.
I correct people now who say "you must be thrilled to be having a girl." I say "well, yes, we are thrilled to having a healthy baby, a boy would be just as thrilling." I don't ever want my boys to think that they were somehow worth less than a girl or that we were "trying" to get our girl and didn't want them more than anything else in this world.
If folks stopped to think about how painful their comments could be to either a mother with gender disappointment or how hurtful they could be to the actual children involved, I believe more would shut their mouths. Or at least think before they spoke.
The thing I find the most annoying about the whole topic is that gender isn't a choice. We can't plan what we have! We don't get a choice so then why do people make such a big deal about it? It's not like we can help it.
