Agreed. Some hospitals even have good reputations regarding natural childbirth. Make sure to communicate with them early on and clearly that you want to go the natural route.

If labor this time goes anything like last time, there is no way I'm doing that without the epidural. I'm hopeful that everything will go better this time and I can have the birth I envisioned last time. I didn't want to be tied to the bed but I was so miserable and so exhausted that I begged for the epidural from the minute we walked in the door. I had a fourth degree tear and an episiotomy. I would not have wanted either without an epidural. I felt enough of childbirth to not want that again, thank you very much.

Me too markswife! Had I not had the tear and episiotomy, DS getting stuck and the Doctor having to physically remove the placenta because I was just too exhausted at the end to push out anything else, I think I might try - the funny thing is that it was all totally fine and bearable until those last couple minutes, but I can't imagine what it would have been like without the epi because it was just so bad with it. The thought of reaching that point and then not being able to get the epi is just too much for me this time around I think. In some respects it might have helped to have been able to feel so I could tell what was going on, but I think I would have gone into a total panic without the epi since I was almost in a panic with it by the end...

I felt under a lot of pressure at my hospital - I think because I allowed students to be there and there were too many people in the room so I got overwhelmed - so I curled into a ball through contractions and just agreed with whatever the Doctors said.

While I would LOVE to go natural--and plan on trying for as long as I can without medication--I know my personal limitations and will go with whatever is going to allow me to get through the labor.

I had always been really gung ho on natural childbirth...until I watched my sister give birth. She is a tough a** cookie, and watching her break down through the pain freaked me the heck out. She also had her entire vaginal wall blow out and had to get a blood transfusion, so...her situation might have been special.

I used to think I wanted to do an all-natural birth, but after talking to a lot of my friends (that have done both), I've decided not to. I know women have done it for years and years without drugs... but, I figure I live in a day and age where you don't HAVE to go through the pain (and I'm a wimp), so... once it's offered, I will most likely take it.

The only thing that sucks is that I did want to do a water birth, which you can't do with the epi..so there is a trade off there.

I'm a wimp, too! By 4-5 cm, I was so ready to get my epidural!

last time I went from 6-10 cm in an hour, so there was no time for anything. I didn't even know if it was "real" labor when i went in, they took one look at me and were like, "we're taking you straight to L&D" and sure enough, I was already 6 cm

No way! I am way too easy going so I thought I would help out the medical profession - I thought they would have 1 or 2 people in there, not half the hospital! So no, this time I'm definitely declining that - or saying they have to limit it to 1 or 2 people. It felt like the Super Bowl with all eyes on me - totally NOT my thing!!!
