Leaving in a few minutes to take my mom to the hospital (2 hours away) fora coclear implant. She has nerve deafness and has been unable to hear for years. She currently has 7% hearing left (which is next to nothing). Scary and exciting. It is a 3+ hour surgery and she is in her 60s. On the other hand, if it works she will hear for the first time in about 25 years. They don't turn the implant on for 2 weeks and then it is weeks of therapy to train the brain the hear. Her goal is to hear Ellianna's cry when she arrives.
Long surgery. Nearly 5 hours since they need to drill in very delicate areas. Just recently got her into her room. Hopefully she will fall asleep soon and I will head to the hotel. They do not activate the implant for 6 weeks. Then she has therapy weekly or every other week until June 3. The teach the mind how to interpret what is "heard". It is amazing what science can do.
