I started having some fairly strong and pretty uncomfortable cramps last night and they continued on and off today despite the over 70 ounces of water I had drank before 1pm so my midwife had me go in and while my cervix was closed (yay!) they decided I needed a fetal fibronectin test (fFN). I had this test when I was pregnant with DS2 and although it came back positive he wasn't born until 39 weeks, 8 weeks after I had the positive test. My midwife said I will be getting this test periodically now until I reach 35 weeks or have a positive. I should find out the results in the morning, it sucks having to wait! Praying it's negative so that I don't have to start on meds.
Fetal fibronectin is a protein and everything I've read describes it as the "glue" that attaches the amniotic sac to the lining of the uterus. It shouldn't be present in cervical fluid between 22 and 35 weeks and if it is you are at an increased risk for preterm labor.
