Okay, I had the hardest time with this because it’s all french to me. But I think I FINALLY got all the LOA stuff figured out/understood. For California anyways. So I thought I’d post it here in case any other Californians were still confused or someone, someday, “googles” this topic and needs answers. Here it is in layman’s terms.

Under the federal FMLA leave we are allowed off work: 4 weeks before the baby is due and 6 weeks after (8 weeks if c-section) the baby is born for “Pregnancy Disability”. These weeks are all paid (at 55% or 60% or something) by the state of California under SDI.

Once that time has expired, we are then allowed an additional 12 weeks off under the state of California’s CFRA leave for “Bonding”. The first 6 weeks of this leave are paid (again at 55%/60%) by the state of California under PFL. The second six weeks are unpaid.

SO- the terms FMLA and CFRA apply to the types of leave you are covered by at work. SDI and PFL are the terms used to describe the types of claims you make with the state of California for compensation under each leave.

FYI- If you apply for SDI with the state of California for pregnancy disability, they automatically send you the paperwork for an easy transition to PFL for the bonding.

Make sense?

I was getting so confused with all the terms (FMLA, CFRA, SDI, PFL) and what each one meant/covered.

My leave starts in 8 days so I needed to get this figured out…PRONTO!

Wow that's a lot of paid time off! Cool for you guys! Most places I have worked, FMLA was always unpaid. It basically was just a placemarker to keep your job for you until you got back.

Wow that's great. My company just got bought and the new company's leave is MUCH better than current. Currently we get 2 weeks paid maternity, and then after that it's either unpaid or use your PTO. The new company is 6 weeks paid maternity and then up to 6 weeks after you can use unpaid leave or PTO. Safe to say I'm hoping Cooper makes his apperance AFTER May 1st so I can get in on the new benefits

We get 36 wks at standard mat pay which is three quarters of ur wages and I've got 4 wks paid holiday before that so it's not bad although I'm still losing about £40 p/w and a further 3 months unpaid so technically u could be off for a year x

Thanks for posting this. I'm a little familiar with it from my first pregnancy but it's good to refresh my memory. I wish I was going out right at the beginning of April but I have to work until mid april because of my school internship I'm soooo tired
