I just got back from my 39 week appointment. We saw a rotation doctor, not my usual one and I was asked by the nurse if I wanted to be checked and I said yes. I wasn't warned ahead of time and during the exam it hurt like hell, but my doctor had a hard time finding my cervix so I assumed that's what was going on. Next thing I know she's telling me "let me know when the pain is too much" which I thought was weird, but let her continue the exam for another minute before I had enough. Then she said "you'll probably have some bleeding, I just stripped your membranes. Maybe we'll avoid an induction." I'm livid!

Is it normal procedure for this to happen without warning? I feel like I should have been asked beforehand... For those who have had a membrane sweep, did it induce labor?

PS: I didn't ask for an induction, I just asked how many weeks they will let me go before one is scheduled.

I'd complain, they absolutely should ask for your consent! Why are they threatening induction?

My blood pressure has always run high, she also wants to do another preeclampsia 24 hour urine, but my doctor knows it runs high. It was the same BP as last week and doctor congratulated me on it being lower... I have a feeling none of this would have happened had I seen my normal doc.

I cannot believe she did that without discussing it with you first. This makes me upset. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Oh wow...I can't believe that! I'm sorry she didn't ask or at least give you an opportunity to refuse.

WHOA, that's not allowed. Maybe it was a miscommunication between nurse and doctor? i dunno, that sounds wrong.

They should absolutely ask! I had mine done yesterday, and just got out of labor and delivery with contractions that are 1 to 3 minutes apart but not strong enough to be admitted... But i requested to have mine done! It seems they shouldn't have done it all without explaining it 1st, especially if they were having a difficult time finding your cerix! Even after requesting it my OB had to explain to me what it was and how it is done and tell me the possible effects of it

Thanks for the support, ladies. I will call Monday and make a complaint about this. I hope I can request that she is taken out of the rotation for my labor because I don't want her doing anything else without consent!

That would seriously piss me off. And I believe that it would be a major no-no for them to do it without consent.

My last doctor did this the last time I was pregnant and my dh and I were FURIOUS. Please file a complaint. I didn't because I was so shocked and was dealing with so many other things. I really wish I had. I switched doctors immediately though. Sorry you're dialing with this, I remember feeling SO violated!

That sounds awful. I would make a complaint as well. They should absolutely get your consent before doing that.

That's terrible!! I have never had a membrane sweep, but I certainly would expect that any OB/nurse/midwife would ASK and EXPLAIN before I had one done. At this point, I would refuse one because I've heard that it can go either way, and I'd rather just wait for my body to do stuff on its own timeframe.

I would most definitely complain about this! And that's saying something because most things I would suck up and not make waves about, but this is a complete violation!!

I didn't have to sign some sort of paperwork for consent, but I most certainly requested it (it wouldn't have been done otherwise I don't think- not without my OB asking) before it happened. Yeah, that sounds totally wrong that they did it without making you aware of what they were doing at that instant.

That's terrible that they didn't ask! I would have been mad too. I am having one done next week but the doctor and I discussed it. I would be livid if they did and didn't ask.
