I never chew ice. I was a dental assistant for a while, and that's one of those things that gets drilled (hehe) into your head. Chewing ice is bad for your teeth! But for the last 2 months or so I've had this undeniable compulsion to chew ice. It's soooooo satisfying for some reason.

Well, I found out yesterday that there's actually a medically proven link between the compulsion to chew ice, and low iron! My midwife has been telling me for months that I should be taking an extra iron supplement - I've had really low energy this whole pregnancy, and my iron levels were low when they did all the blood work at the beginning. I've been such a slacker about it though, I just keep forgetting to pick up an iron supplement at the store.

I also found out that if you take iron at the same time as calcium, the calcium will actually block the absorption of iron. Most prenatal vitamins have both calcium and iron in them, so really having them both in the same pill isn't doing you any good. If you find that your iron levels are low and that you're completely wiped out, you should be taking an extra iron supplement at a different time of day than when you take your prenatal vitamin.

Anyways, for all I know this is totally common knowledge, but for me it was a huge revelation and explained my weird craving for chewing on ice. Just thought I'd pass the info along!

I love chewing ice. LOVE it. Especially certain types of small ice cubes that certain places have or the hospital has. Haha. I will have no issue with chewing ice chips through labor. I've never had low iron, though. It's just something I like doing.

Honestly...one of the things that made me so happy about choosing the hospital an hour away was that I KNOW their ice is awesome. Sounds ridiculous, but I know I'll appreciate it when the baby decides to come.

A really good iron supplement is hemaplex or floradix. Both our bound with what your body needs to absorb the iron. Big plus is they are non constipating. I have levels of 8 in my 2nd trimester and we are back to normal range with the supplement.

I love just eating ice too.'its so yummy.

I have been staying really thirsty, esp right before bed. But if I drink a ton of water, I feel like I can't breathe or will make my reflux worse when I go to bed. So, I have found that chewing ice gives me as much satisfaction without making my stomach too full. Crazy, I know, but I'm an ice-fiend! lol

I chew ice all the time, I love it and I know it is bad for my teeth.

I can not take iron pills, due to them making me very sick. So I take blackstrap molasses
