Hi, I'm Dee. I'm 23 and just found out that i'm expecting my first baby Thursday night. I'm going to the health dept tomorrow to get signed up for insurance and hopefully make sure this little one is ok. This is my first and very much a surprise pregnancy. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypoglycemia and to say that I'm scared and anxious is an understatement. I was also a fairly heavy smoker before I found out and now I'm very worried that that negatively affected the baby.
My biggest struggles right now, although I have an amazing supportive boyfriend who is ecstatic (!) I really don't have many female friends who understand what I'm going through. My mom isn't really talking me to much right now because she is very traditional and I know she isnt happy about me having this baby before I have a ring on my finger.
I'm under a lot of stress right now, haven't had much morning sickness but I'm starving and tired all the time, my boobs are sore, and my stomach feels heavy with occasional slight cramps. Based on my last period I think I am due sometime the last week of December.

Anyone going through dealing with telling relatives?? Troubles at work? Signing up for medicare?

First off, Congrats on your LO!

Here signing up for insurance is pretty easy. You just go to the health department and they set you up with everything. They do a urine test and give you a sheet of paper confirming your pregnancy. They will take down all of your info and will get copies of your ID, birth certificate, Pay stubs (here you need your last 3), rental agreement/mortgage, light/water/phone/cable bills, and bank statements. They will set you up with an appointment with a case worker (usually within 2-4 weeks) but you will leave with active insurance to use until then if you meet guidelines. They also sign you up for WIC which is a great program and will get you an appointment with them in 2-4 weeks.

Most Dr's advise against quitting smoking cold turkey while your pregnant as it can cause a shock to your system and cause miscarriage. So you may want to cut back to half them slowly wean yourself off by 10-12 weeks or so.

As far as work goes, as long as you do not work in a dangerous field, you don't have to tell them anything until you want to.

Things will fall into place and it's good that you're being proactive about the healthcare stuff because it sometimes takes a while (my friend had tons of issues with Florida's system).

I grew up in a really religiously strict household and I remember the issues I had with them when I moved in with the man who is now my husband before we were married. So I can only imagine your situation. I hope she comes around, but if she doesn't, she's the one that will be missing out on a wonderful little soul who could be filling her life with love.

Congratulations momma! Go get yourself taken care of and take everything as it comes. It will be okay. Like someone mentioned above, if you are a relatively heavy smoker then its probably best to wean yourself down instead of cold turkey. But just think, a baby is an awesome motivation for quitting. Congrats again.

Congratulations and Welcome! Pregnancy is a nerve wrecking, anxiety filled ordeal! The best support is places like JM by talking to people who are/have gone through the same thing. In my experience, most of the time, parents come around as time goes on through the pregnancy. Your mom probably just needs time and space to process it all. As for the smoking, I smoked through my pregnancies with my three children. I'm sure your baby is fine. However, babies and Momma's do so much better when the mom has at least cut down, preferably quit. If you want someone to talk to for support feel free to pm me. I'm 3 months cigarrette free and really excited to go through this pregnancy as a non-smoker. Things will get easier, just remember to relax and take care of you! Good Luck and keep us posted on how you're doing!

Congratulations - Just wanted to let you know, I don't believe you have to go to the health department to sign up for medicaid. What state are you in? You most likely can do it online. For example, here in texas i just went to yourtexasbenefits.com and filled out an application. I also have the option of dialing 211 and then asking for the website, if I didn't already know it.

Congrats honey!! I was on medicare for my first 2 1/2 pregnancies (Husband was in school, and we just had no money). It's good to get on it fast, because with my first one, I didn't actually get approved for 3 months (my Dr. knew I was pending approval and waited to bill anything until I was approved or not [I was]) so it was stressful! Best to get it started quickly.

As for the other stuff, I've never smoked so I have no advice on that, but I agree with Jessie, it's an awesome motivation!

I hope your mother comes around soon. Babies are always a blessing, no matter the circumstances they come about in. Until then, you've got us!

This is pregnancy #5 for me, and it's still a little scary! lol

Wow! You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for all the support. I live in Tn and i have an appt in the morning, theyre going to take the urine test and then sign me up for Tncare and WIC. I was slightly irritated at the person I talked to this morning because she was like" oh? your a week late...we dont test unless you're two weeks late." I said" I understand that, however I've taken 3 hpt's and they're all positive." She goes "oh ok then."
