Why did my doc check me at 36 weeks, but not again? My cousin is a week ahead of me and he checked her at 36, and not 37 or 38. So we assume 36 was the one and only check. Just wondering why.

Also, I'm posting another cervix question in the secret forum

Good question. I get checked at every appointment starting at 36 weeks, but dilation at 36-38 weeks really isn't a predictor of when you might go into labor. It's probably a good thing to not be checked. I have heard stories of so many doctors checking at 38 weeks and then pressuring for inductions or c-sections at 39 weeks for lack of progress at that point.

My doctor checked me at 36 weeks when she did my strep-b swab, since she was already down there, and then didn't plan to check me again until 39 weeks. But I had some pretty intense contractions so she checked me sooner than intended.

Her theory is that checking really doesn't do much good that early, since it isn't an accurate indicator of impending labor and you can walk around dilated for quite awhile before labor starts.

I was checked at 36. I think they do it to confirm head down as well. At 37 the doc asked if I wanted to be checked. I opted to get checked as my last labor was very quick. I really want Ellianna delivered in a hospital with a doc in the room. If they check and I am 7 I get admitted. If they check and I am five we chat. Otherwise I get to leave

My dr has checked me every week since about 35 weeks actually so not sure why your dr hasn't checked you again.

mine checked at 36 while they did the swab thing but didn't at my 37. I didn't ask when or if they would check again but I plan on asking at my 38 week appointment. It really doesn't mean anything but it is still fun to know.

With my hospital births with the naval hospital they dont check unless you ask until 39 weeks which was similar to midwifery care. You can always ask if you want to know. But like others have said it really has no value until labor and even then you can go the whole birth without having cervical checks. I only had 1 check with Everett and that was to make sure I was fully dilated. If all else fails just say you would like to know and they will either tell you why they dont check or they will check you.
