I'm posting this in the breastfeeding forum too, but I'm wondering if any of you ladies have some insight for me. Since DD was about one week old we've been dealing with cluster feeding. And when I say cluster feeding, I mean if she's awake, all she wants to do is nurse. No one else can hold her for more than 5 or 10 minutes before she starts rooting and then throwing a hissy fit.

So, stupid me, I got a little Google happy last night and was reading about low milk flow. I haven't had her weight checked since her one week appointment (she was 5 oz over her birth weight at 6 days old), but her once loose fitting clothes are getting tight, and we've had to go up in size with diapers. Her diaper output has been consistent since birth (plenty of wets and poops). She seems to show a lot of the symptoms of low milk flow, but I've started pumping once or twice a day and I can pump up to 4 oz off of one breast in about 10 minutes.

I don't know whether this is a genuine BFing issue or if I just got lucky with a colicky baby. I know she does get gas quite a bit, but this constant need to feed is starting to worry me. Any insight?

This sounds a lot like my first DS. He was semi permenatly attached to my breast. He would nurse for about 45 min every 1.5 hours. My supply was awesome because I pumped 34-38 oz a day when he went to daycare (and he drank all of it). At 2.5 he still has a crazy high metabolism.

What did help my sanity was to pump and bottle feed a lot. Other people could help and it gave me a little break.

She may just like to suck too. Sounds like nursing and your milk supply are established. Have you tried a paci? Also, how much does she spit up? Babies with reflux like to nurse frequently because the milk helps soothe the burning.

Abri was like that. I got really good at nursing and using the potty at the same time because she was permanently attached to my boob. It may just be a phase at the point. If you are seeing plenty of wet and dirty diapers, I wouldn't think you are having any supply issues. I don't really have any suggestions for you because a paci and bottle feeding never worked for Abri. I just dealt with it until she became mobile and was more interested in crawling.

I would get a wrap or a carrier for her so you can get things done. Huge hugs Hun!
