I can't stand the bulky pads the hospital provides. I bought a couple packs of always ultra thin overnight pads with wings. I used them after I had my son. I doubled them up until the bleeding slowed down and they seemed to work ok. What kind are you going to use?
I bought the heaviest overnight maxi I could find ( I think they are always) and then I bought a box of heavy flow to get me thru the later weeks. I typically use the thin overnight with wings for a typical flow but I think there's too much blood for those.

I'll use the hospital ones until they run out then whatever maxi pads are in our stockpile. We have a selection of always, kotex and walgreens own brand I think. I just gave a ton away to the people involved in the Oklahoma tornado, so I'll have to see what we have on hand.
I also use the hospital pads for 3-5 days and then switch to Always Infinity. I don't love wearing the synthetic pads for as long as the bleeding lasts (with my first it was only 6 weeks but #2 was 12 weeks and #3 was 11 weeks!) because they do get pretty uncomfortable, but I'm not ready to make the switch to cloth. I love cloth diapers for my babies, but I've tried cloth nursing pads and hated them and I'm just unwilling to make the initial expenditure to see whether or not I like cloth pads.
