I started my daughter on about 1/2 to 1 jar of baby food per day. She's doing okay with it - not great, not bad (I think). Now it seems like I'm seeing that by 9 months she should be eating at least 3 meals with baby food per day?
My questions are: how are you transitioning your baby into foods other than breastmilk/formula? How long until you give your baby solid foods not pureed?
I have read so many different things; I know there isn't 1 right answer, so I'm just curious how you all are doing it.
Whenever we introduce a new food, it's in the morning. The first couple weeks his schedule was:
-wake up to bottle,
-eat a pureed food about two hours later,
-bottles as normal the rest of the day.
Then we added another meal in the afternoon, and at this point his schedule is:
-wake up to bottle (abt 7am at this point)
-pureed foods at 9am-ish (two or three kinds) + a couple ounces of formula
-bottles as needed during day
-pureed foods at 4pm-ish (two or three kinds) + a couple ounces of formula
-bottle in evening, another at bedtime
He gets a total of 4 to 5 tablespoons of pureed food throughout the day. I make his purees, including: lamb, buffalo, liver, avocado, banana, apple, pear, carrot, sweet potato, and beets.
He's almost seven months, and I'll probably leave him at two meals for a while. Instead of adding amount of food, now that he's getting two meals I'm going to focus on increasing his variety, and then introduce a third meal at about nine months.
Another thing I recently added were one of those mesh suck things. I'll put a banana or softened pear in there while I'm prepping his food if he's hungry. I put an out-turned prune in there the other day for him to suck on and it was so much more efficient than prune juice for his constipation!
At first I just did 1/2 a jar of Stage 1 baby food once a day. Now we are up to 1/2-1jar of Stage 2 baby food 2-3x a day. When he eats baby food he gets less milk with that meal. If he eats a whole jar/tub then sometimes he'll only eat like an oz of milk. Generally his day goes like this but it does change from day to day depending on his mood.
Breakfast- Oatmeal mixed with a bit of fruit and 4oz of milk
Mid morning- 6oz and Nap
Lunch- Fruit or yogurt and 4oz of milk OR 1/2 fruit & 1/2 veggie with 4oz milk
Mid day- 6oz of milk and Nap
Supper- 1 jar veggies or the other half of the fruit and veggies from lunch with 4oz milk. Some days he'll eat another 6oz bottle before this. Just depends.
Night time feeding around 7 or 7:30pm- 6oz then bedtime.
And some days I skip the oatmeal in the mornings. Some where in there he takes a 3rd nap around 4:30 and it's after one of his 6oz bottles. I remember with DS1 that the older he got I started introducing more table type foods so that by the time he was one he would be able to rely strictly on it. Marshall naws on stuff now that we have sometimes if it's something he can't break off, but takes purees for the most part. The older he gets the more I'll give him table food and decrease the formula intake so that he can come off of it at 1.
