i don't mean to scaremonger, but i know arsenic has been in the news lately because of apple and grape juice and rice is another significant source of it. since rice cereal is so frequently given to infants, i thought i would share:

This is really disturbing, I will try not to introduce rice cereal when we. Start solids. Now I'm happy my dd never liked it. Thanks for the info Rhea!

Thank you for sharing!! I'm wondering if a health food store like Whole Foods (Do they have those outside of CA?) would have a better option? It kind of sounds unavoidable though.

The problem is that it's in the soil/water from past arsenic-containing pesticide use (and remains there for a very long time), so all rice picks it up regardless of how it's grown now (organic or not). Because rice absorbs it more effectively than other crops, other cereals have less of it, so if you want to go the cereal route it's best just to vary the types you're giving.

And yeah, Whole Foods is nationwide.

I read this about a year before getting pregnant. After speaking with my doc about arsenic and some other rice issues we've decided to skip rice cereal all together. We may try oats or go right into purees.

We were going to skip rice cereal anyway. Does it even have any health benefits? DD didn't like it and I was thinking there's no real point in giving solids until at least 6 months. We're going to try and wait longer than that too.
