My DH is up for a promotion at work. He has been with the company for 13 years, since he was 16 and he works harder than anyone else in the company. Currently, he only makes about 2/3 what others in his position are making. We are financially struggling and could really use the good raise that would come with this promotion but more than anything, he has earned it. So if you could all cross your fingers for us that he gets it, that would be great. It's looking pretty good so far, but we don't know for sure yet.

Do his immediate higher ups know what he is making? Sometimes they do not. My husband's old job was part of a larger national network. When I was pregnant with my first he went in and told him he wanted a raise because he had not had a pay increase since being hired on from being an intern and since then he has been given a title and given lots more responsibility. They told him that they couldn't give him more and that he was being paid according to his bracket or level or whatever.

Well, a month later they were going through all the employee paperwork and they realized that no, in fact, he was making $20k less a year than what the parent company set for people in DH's position. Somebody somewhere did not oversee his pay increase when he got his title and hit his number of years, so they just assumed that he already had it and was asking for more on top of it. Technically they owed him at least a year's worth of backpay but he didn't want to rock the boat.

Similarly, my higher ups had no idea what i was making. Before I left for maternity leave with Alex I was offered a job somewhere else for $12 an hour. I told my job that I was going to take it. They offered me $11.50 an hour to stay with possible pay increase and I get to keep my vacation days and pay (something I would not get with the new job, I was 6month pregnant at the time). When I came back from maternity leave I kept my $11.50 an hour, which made me the most overpaid employee there. My higher ups would say, while complaining about other employees asking for raises, that $9-$10 was an acceptable median wage and that no one makes more. I kept my mouth tightly shut, lol. But I did desperately want to say that $9-$10.50 for a lead position in a daycare was acceptable in the early 2000s and now it's not competitive at all.

His current immediate boss has tried twice to get him more money and the DM keeps saying it's not possible. They do know what he makes..
