So I was browsing the baby aisles at Target the other day and was looking at sippy cups. I noticed on a couple of the packages it said 4mo. +. Do people give babies sippy cups at 4 months old? I was kind of surprised by this, and maybe even a little intrigued. What about babies who nurse? If a breastfed baby gets bottles of expressed BM during the day would she get the bottle until she weans or would she transition to a sippy cup at some point? If she would transition to a sippy cup, at what age would I start? I guess I have never thought about this before.

we didn't start doing sippy cups until DS was probably over 6 months old

I've been planning on giving Arthur a sippy cup with a little bm in it when I start feeding him solids. Since I'm going to do BLW, I figured it wouldn't hurt for him to start trying to use a sippy too.

Thank you *Kiliki* for the beautiful siggy

I don't start sippy cups til about 9 months also and start with water. I never put formula in them either. I think 4 months is just too young for a sippy cup in my opinion.

We don't do sippy cups. They never have bottles so the sippy cup is not really a natural transition for them. DD had one but never seemed to figure it out. She went straight to a real cup and sometimes a straw cup when we wanted to keep messes down. We will do same for DS. I remember asking my pediatrician if she needs to learn to use a sippy cup since she seems to find a real cup much easier and he looked at me like I was crazy lol. He said "there is no reason they ever have to use a sippy cup... It's just convenient for some families, but if she can use a real cup than just stick with that." He is awesome, was also very supportive of BLW and encouraged us to give her utensils and such from the very beginning, which has also been great.

Everett didn't gy one until he was almost 1 and only for zoo trips or Disney trips. At home he used a regular cup. We got these awesome little cups at ikea.

Most of my breastfed babies went straight to using a regular cup as soon as they were able to hold it. I decided it was too much hassle trying to keep all those little pieces clean and not lost.

My experience may be a little different since my kids go to daycare. My kids were BF and had to have bottles of pumped BM at daycare during the day. I started introducing the sippy cup around 8-9 months with just water for practice. Once they got the hang of it, I gradually transitioned all of their bottle feedings at school to sippy cup feedings with pumped BM. By the time they were about 10-11mo old, there was no more bottle. Just boob or sippy cup.

For the record, I'm jealous of those of you with little ones that use regular cups without making hugs messes. Jaleigh does just fine and has for a long time...Kiefer is almost 3 and will ask for a sippy cup if I hand him a regular cup. He knows he makes huge messes with those things and would rather not have to clean up after himself lol.
