Two months ago at Finn's two month appointment I scheduled his four month appointment for a day that I knew I'd already be off work. That appointment was supposed to be next Friday, the 18th. Finn will be four months on Wednesday, the 16th. On Monday, I get a phone call from the pedi's office that the doctor will be out of town next week and we need to reschedule his appointment. The only available appointment that either I or DH would be available for was today. When DH got there, the doctor refused to give Finn his shots because he's not four months old yet. That's fine if he really needs to wait until after four months, but why let me schedule an appointment before that. The best part was that he told him to come back next week so his nurse could do the shots. Are you kidding me? Luckily, the other doctor overruled him and had the nurse give the shots anyway.

He is also recommending physical therapy....again. He first suggested this at the one month appointment because he thought Finn's neck might be developing unevenly. We did PT twice a week for 8 weeks. I've since had other doctor's tell me that this was completely unnecessary. This time he is saying that his shoulders are weak and he should be holding himself up with his arms already. It seems that he has a reputation for recommending PT to a lot of patients, like way more than is statistically coincidental. I don't know if he's getting kickbacks or what.

I wasn't there, but DH also said that he was disorganized and kind of a jerk. It seems like every other appointment he's a jerk. The other times, he's awesome. It's a Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde thing. I hate to change doctor's this early. When the guy is in a good mood he's awesome. He's also one of only two pedi's that have privileges at my local hospital, so if Finn ever ended up in the hospital I'd have to see him anyway more than likely.

I am a very firm believer in being picky with your medical professionals where you can. There is no point in staying with a doctor you don't like because every appointment is going to be the same struggle.

In Canada, it's extremely difficult to find a family physician, so once you have one it's a huge deal to have to switch. Might take you many months (or in some areas, years) to find another one. I'm not 100% sold on the way my doctor has dealt with Marcos yet, but I decided to wait it out a little bit longer and see how it goes.

I'm planning to switch drs before Z's next appt, but its mainly because of the ridiculously long wait at the current office. I like most of their policies and their breastfeeding support, but it shouldn't take 1.5 hours for an appointment when I only see the nurse practitioner for 5 minutes! (and the appt was with the dr but he was TOO far behind, and it would have taken longer). I'm thinking its better to switch early on before you get too comfortable somewhere and there are more records that need transferring.

I'd be asking him how he knows he can't hold himself up that way. B absolutely can, but she very rarely does. Maybe twice. All babies develop differently and do things differently.

It is never too soon to switch if you feel things aren't up to par. There are fantastic doctors out there who won't give you grief.

Thanks so much Claire for my awesome siggy

My advice is that if you're not comfortable with the care you are getting from the doctor, switch. Having a doctor that isn't working for you isn't worth it. Find someone who you like!

I agree!! If you can find somebody you like and trust with your baby, it will be worth it to switch.
