Anyone else's baby taking a while to gain weight?

Here are Maggie's weights so far (from several different scales)

Birth (after feeding) 6 lbs 14 oz
Day 2 (at discharge) 6 lbs 10 oz
Day 3 (pediatrician) 6 lbs 6 oz
Day 6 (lactation clinic) 6 lbs 6 oz
Day 7 (WIC meeting) 6 lbs 7 oz

So after the first week I thought she had started to gain weight again, but then at her doctor's appointment this morning, at 2 weeks, she was still 6 lbs 6 oz.

She has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, has had a good latch from the start ,and she eats all the time. I really expected her to be at birth weight today so I was kind of disappointed that she isn't gaining. The doctor is not concerned yet and just scheduled another weight check for next week. My hormones are acting up today, though, so I've been kind of upset about it - partly because I had such a hard time with my son and I thought I was finally getting it right this time and wouldn't have to worry about her eating.

We're in the exact same situation. I don't know why she isn't gaining quicker. She eats every 2 hrs during the day and every 2-4 at night. At first she was a really sleepy nurser and she still is sometimes but for the most part she's got a good suck/swallow rhythm going. I feel like I have plenty of milk cause I'm able to pump a little immediately after she eats. Usually an oz or less but that's after a full feeding.

At 2 weeks Kinley was only 7-15.5 and her birth weight was 8-6. I'm taking her to babyology tomorrow to get weighed. If she still hasn't hit her birth weight I'm going to talk to the ladies that work there.

I'm taking fenugreek(just 3 a day for now so I can increase if needed) and made some lactation cookies today with oats, flax seed, and brewers yeast. So we'll see if it makes a difference!

I made some of the lactation cookies last week and have been drinking the mother's milk tea too, but haven't tried any supplements yet. I'm going to get a manual pump and add some pumping in, at least to try to help her get more of the fattier hindmilk. She's a sleepy nurser too, but I didn't worry about it because she eats so much.

Edie's been my fastest gainer. In the first two weeks she was gaining 2 oz per day. Not sure if it works for every baby, but I only nurse on one side. In the first few weeks it was for about 20-30 mins. Anyway, she then definitely gets hind milk. Might be worth trying. Hope your babes start gaining soon so you don't have to worry.

I don't know how you only nurse on one side. Kinley pulls off but is still hungry. In fact a lot of times she nurses on both sides 2-3 times. Sometimes I really feel a let down and she nurses on one side for a while, but other times she'll only stayed latched for a few minutes but is still hungry. So I keep having to go back and forth for her to be satisfied.

I have to do the same thing with Kate (back and forth multiple times). Using different positions and lots of breast compression too. My son always did both sides, but DD1 got my milk supply up so high I was able to just do one side at a time with her for a while.

Kate dropped from 6'12 to 6'1 by day 4 I think? She lost more than 10% anyway, and was getting sleepy and I couldn't pump anything so we had to supplement, She slowly crept up after supplementing, that was a friday she was 6'1, then she went up to 6'8 on sunday. We didn't measure again till the thursday (about a week and half old) and she had dropped again to 6'3. I was letting her work too hard and she had been taking less from the bottle, but I should have encouraging her to take it more. So we pushed it again that day and the next day got in for an emergency appointment to a breastfeeding specialist, she went up to 6'10 in one day! (But I was using a feeding tube thing attached to my breast, so she was doing very little work.) on monday this week her weight was at 6'15.5 and today at the specialist she was at 7'2. So she is gaining now, even though she's started taking less formula again, just very slowly. My milk supply is slowly sloooowly going up too, she's getting about half of what she needs from me now, as opposed to about a third.
I've been on lots of herbs, and adding in a bit of pumping, not a lot since I don't get more than 10-15 ml out at a time and I find it too much extra work, with nursing and bottle feeding already. Now we are going to try the medication, called Domperidone and see if we can get her off the bottle altogether. I should be able to, always hae before, it just seems to take my body SO long to figure out what it's doing. Plus my small babies aren't super efficient. Post Partum is HARD!

Just remember, that nursing is HARD work for them, they burn a lot of calories just getting the milk out of you, that is why she isn't gaining super fast, yet is eating all the time, But as long as she's not losing, it's ok. The bigger they get the more efficient they become, I think that's how I've gotten mine to wean of supplements each time, they just got bigger and better at nursing.

That sounds incredibly hard. Kudos for sticking it out.

No idea how the one side thing works. Maybe because she was so sleepy for the first month ( she probably slept 22-23 hours a day), she was too conked out to want a second side. All my efforts were to keep her interested enough for the one side.

Good luck, Katie! I have someone coming from WIC tomorrow morning and we will weigh her before and after feeding and see how she is doing. She is also bringing me a hand pump so I might start pumping for her too.

Max has been gaining well (he's a big eater) and we switch sides. I'll sometimes relatch him on the first side if I feel like he unlatched for reasons other than satisfaction. Most of the time though, I let him nurse until he is completely done and either unlatches or falls asleep and I unlatch him before he bites me lol. If he only eats from one side- he usually only goes an hour until he wants to eat again.

Emme was, she was

7.12 birth
7.5 4/7
7.4 4/10
7.3 4/14
7.6 4/16
7.15 4/22
8.13 4/29

What I did was make sure she was nursing every 2 hours because she wasn't. Then I took 3 each fenugreek and blessed thistle 3 times a day. Drank mothers milk tea once a day and had oatmeal once a day. I wanted to increase my milk just incase. I started doing all that on April 14th.

Oh and we only feed one side. Sometimes I'll burp her but put her back on the same side so she's getting the hind milk. There's still milk when she's done, sometimes 45 minutes. Only at night when she cluster feeds do I switch sides.

I made another thread but Kinley finally gained some substantial weight. Between last Monday (11days) and today (21 days) Kinley's gained 12 oz. I think Maggie is about a week behind her so I'm sure she'll start gaining too! I think my milk was just slow to come in and she was too sleepy. Now that's it's easier and faster she's getting much better at nursing. I'm sure Maggie will gain soon!!
