Hi ladies! Just wondering of those who have other children, when did you transition them out of the crib? My daughter will be 18 months when our next baby arrives..not sure if she will be ready for a toddler bed…any suggestions? Thanks!!!

My son was ready at 2. He climbed out if the crib so I thought it was time. I transitioned him to a toddler mattress on the floor. I could have converted his crib but I figured if he was on the floor there was nowhere to fall. he was really easy. He would not step foot off the matress much less walk out of the room.

My 18 month old daughter will be a different story. I'm sure I will find her sitting on top of the kitchen island eating raisins at midnight.

I wish you lots of luck.

My son will be 2.5 when baby comes, but I am not wanting to push him out so I already bought another crib. He doesn't climb out and he chills SO NICELY before and after sleep times that I am not willing to lose that, lol.

Since I am having another boy and don't really need to buy anything else- it wasn't a big deal to buy another crib!

I've always heard that, unless it's unsafe for any reason, keep your toddler in a crib until close to 3 or longer. A very wonderful sleep consultant here who does many conferences nationally says kids should stay in a crib until 4 years. I just switched my dd and she was over 3.

Stay in a crib till 4? Wow! My oldest was too big for his crib by about 3. Plus he had tried to climb out and fell so we had to transition. A bed with rails is a good next best. But I sure did miss being able to plunk him in his crib. Wish my 2 year old was in a crib instead of cosleeping and waking at night to nurse...

DD refused to sleep in a crib. We coslept and tried to transition to a crib, unsuccessfully. Tried the toddler bed and now she sleeps in herbown room at night. She's 18 months right now. I think it just depends on your child and their needs.

Mine were all on the older side 2-3. At one point I had two cribs because my oldest two are only 22 months apart.

If they safely stay in the crib I keep them in there - once climbing I transition. It is a rough few weeks trying to get them used to bedtime without a crib but typically I just stay in there with them for a bit each night.

When my son reached his 2 years, I've decided to get him out of his crib and have his own bed to train him sleep by his own. I've done researching online and I found this Newton Toddler Mattress for him. He seems comfortable, and we love how easy it is to clean. He was sick once and we simply washed the mattress cover and rinsed the mattress in the shower (tip: it definitely dries faster if you blow a fan on it). Really easy clean up! Only draw back is the extra mattress covers are a little pricey, so you either need another place for him to sleep while washing cover (if it is the middle of the night), or buy an extra cover that you may not need that often. One thing to note, this mattresses is not that firm, which may surprise you since that is generally what you read is the safest, but with the breathability of this mattress, it is not an issue. My son does tend to roll toward the middle but it isn't really an issue. Overall, this was worth the money for the piece of mind that he safe even when he rolls over on to his stomach, and I like that it can be thoroughly cleaned.
