I bought a set of 50 rocks from Tobin's Lab with 2 samples each of 25 types of rocks pre-labeled in baggies. The kids told me the colors, whether they were metallic or not, if they were on the Moh's Hardness Scale (and if so what the hardness was), and anything else they wanted to say about that particular rock. I wanted to do the streak color but couldn't find our streak plate. For older kids or to make it harder you could have the kids identify the rocks or just collect rocks from around where you live and identify those.
Madison came home from my MIL's the other day with a bag FULL of rocks she had collected. She had a reason for picking up each one of them. When she was showing them to me, I thought about how much she would enjoy displaying them like you did!
