I know I did this when I was in school...but I didn't remember it until a recent article I read in Parent's magazine. In the article they were making kites, but you could make anything you wanted.
They used construction paper, wax paper, crayons, glue and a pencil sharpener.
The basic gist is that you use the sharpener to turn the crayons into filings...then you sprinkle whatever colors you want onto one sheet of wax paper, cover it with another and then iron with a hot iron to melt the colors together. You cut them into whatever shape you want and use the construction paper as a frame around it. The article showed a kite and they hung it in a window...it was really pretty with the sun shining through.
