Row 1(RS) With RS facing, sk first 15 st to the left of last st made in row 1 of first ear flap, join yarn in next dc, ch3(counts as first dc), sk next dc, dc in each of next 8dc, sk next dc, dc in next st, turn leaving rem sts unworked - 10 sts.
Rows 2-5 - rep rows 2-5 of first ear flap. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Edging
With RS facing, join yarn at bottom of one ear flap, ch 1, sc evenly around entire edge of hat, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off.

If you want the braids
Cut eighteen 24" lengths of yarn, using 9 strands of yarn for each braid, fold bundle in half, pull folded end through hold in row 5 of one ear flap, draw ends of bundle through folded end. Divide fringe into 3 equal sections of yarn, braid strands together. Tie end in an overhand knot. Trim ends even.

Oh how cute!! It's amazing how you can take the same pattern and make it a completely different hat! Is that chunky weight yarn?

No actually it is the Caron Simply Soft. I absolutly LOVE that yarn. It is inexpensive, really soft, and so easy to work with! They have lots of colors too!
