Aww, don't be scared! Just dive in.

Are you looking to knit hats flat or in the round? I hate sewing seams so I always knit them in the round. It's really really easy, I promise.

Here are some basic hat patterns: Baby hats

Baby hats are my favourite thing to knit...I have no idea how many hats I've made for my two nieces 1 & 3 and various other babies. I have a great book that I love and if you get to a more adventurous point, let me know. When I first started out I mainly found free patterns online though. Unfortunately the links are all on my other computer...but for now, I cam across this one that's kind of cute and simple to knit.
Good luck...and my advice is to just jump in...I learned by just doing and I'll bet you could too.

Very nice Fiona. I am just finding my way back to this board. I tend to only knit in winter but especially when there is a bun in the oven. I may yoink your hat pattern. The hat you made is very cute and that is a wicked pompom (I am no good at making pompoms).
