Hello! I think it's time that I join you ladies. I'm Carlye and my daughter Addy is allergic to soy, wheat, and shellfish. She was first diagnosed with the allergies to soy and wheat when she was 6 months old. She has eczema reactions to them and for quite a while her allergist had us using steroids to keep it under control. I encouraged them to take her off of them when I noticed it was starting to affect her growth.
She's 2 1/2 now and doing fairly well. She's pretty much outgrown the wheat allergy, but she was still having a lot of eczema issues, so at her appointment last month her allergist suggested trying a soy-free diet to see if that would help. And not even a week into the new diet her rash was completely gone. It's been a challenge trying to find foods that she can eat, but we've been managing okay. It was hard explaining to her why she couldn't eat the same snack as her friends at preschool, but luckily she's pretty smart and she sort of understood.
The shellfish allergy was a fun discovery that was a complete accident. A few months ago we were having dinner at my parent's and my mom had made a pasta dish and the sauce was tossed with shrimp. She didn't give Addy any of the shrimp, just the pasta and sauce. Addy put one little bite in her mouth and spit it out because she didn't like it. Right after dinner we left and went to Walmart. When I picked her up to put her in the cart her shirt lifted up a little and I noticed a red spot. I lifted her shirt all the way and she was covered in welts. So I ran over to the pharmacy and opened a bottle of Benedryl and gave her a dose in the middle of the store. I'm sure people thought I was crazy.
So that's us.
