I am having a hard time being able to discern my CM, especially between sticky and creamy. I think it's sometimes a matter of not having enough of it to be able to figure it out. Maybe all I've had so far has been sticky. I have to check internally most of the time because I don't really notice much externally. I think I get what egg-white is supposed to look and feel like though, I just haven't had any yet. I think I need pictures or better descriptions or something to help. Does anyone know any good websites or resources for help with classifying CM besides TCOYF?

Bear in mind that checking internally will likely make you think you have more fertile days than you actually do. During the infertile parts of the cycle, the CM dries as it passes through the vagina over glands called the Pockets of Shaw. The Pockets of Shaw extract the water from the mucus, which is what gives a "dry" or "sticky" sort of sensation as opposed to a "wet" or "slippery" sensation. Checking internally disrupts this process and so the mucus you find inside isn't necessarily an accurate reflection of your state of fertility.

Lots of women don't have gobs of mucus to actually see, but if you start to be aware of what you're feeling (without internal exams to confuse your observations), you will start to notice changes. You might go from feeling dry or sticky, to feeling wet or very wet or slippery. Those feelings are just as relevant whether you see any mucus or not! Some women don't see a lot and that's ok.

And as I'm mentioned before, this is all far less confusing with the help of an instructor to walk you through everything step by step - especially the mucus part!

So by internally, does that mean putting your finger right up inside? Are you supposed to observe CM by what's on your underwear or actually on your skin around the vaginal opening? TCOYF says to touch your fingertip to the opening and observe that way. I am finding there are discrepancies between that and what actually shows up on my underwear. I'm not sure which one to go by. This is only my third cycle and I'm still trying to figure this all out and I'm also not sure if my CM is normal anyways because I was on the pill.

So how actually are you *supposed* to observe it? Or doesn't it matter, as long as you are consistent in which method you choose?

Consistency with your method of choice is the most important, because different systems of charting teach different ways of checking it. Observing it is step one, being able to interpret it is step two. That part is usually much, much, much easier with a teacher to walk you through what it all means for you, because each woman is unique.
