What is the true definition of spotting. I've been confused on this pretty much ever since I started charting.

Is it based on quantity? Is it based on flow? Is it based on color?

I've been basing it on color from the beginning.

I determine spotting based on quantity. I know my body enough to know when the amount of blood is more like a period, or more like just spotting. For me, anything less than about two or so dime-fulls is spotting... and 3+ is actual bleeding. But that's MY body. The amount might be different for you or someone else, ya know?

But yeah, I base it on quantity.

Color is irrelevant, it's the amount of bleeding. Spotting can be brown, pink, red, etc. When it's actual flow and you need more than a pantyliner to cope, it's not spotting anymore.

Yeah, I consider it spotting if I can get by without a tampon or pad.

Well if that's the case, then most of my periods would be considered spotting. There are times I can get away with one pad per day. Then there are times where the flow is so hard that I have to change a lot during the day (never where it's two or more during an hour)

That is what confuses me.

that's kind of how my periods (well what I remember of them lol!) were like. A few days of a spotting type flow, and then a couple heavier days, then back to the spotting days. Maybe you are just lucky??

I don't know if I'm LUCKY. The months in which my periods are "spot", I just feel horrible. I never really feel good until I have an actual flow. Then I feel like a new woman.

Huh, that's different..I didn't think spotting or having a heavier flow would make you feel horrible. I guess I always feel worse when it's heavier just because the cramping is more intense.

I think it's because of the water gain that happens when I get ready to have a period. If I can't get rid of it, I just feel bloaty and yuck. Once I have that heavier flow and I can get rid of the extra fluid, then I'm feeling fantastic.

I remember when i was on BC I had to have the pill that had lasix in it because I would gain so much water weight.
