So I only started doing FAM to TTA a couple months ago, but so far so good, even though I am still waiting for my body to regulate post coming off bcp. I've told a couple family members and friends about it, and most are supportive. However, last night I was talking with my SIL and she went off on me for using such an "unsafe" method of birth control. I tried explaining it to her about how it worked, and basically she said, "yeah, I am not sure I believe that is really how it works."

Ummm, okay so you don't believe in science?? I tried not to argue with her about it, but I obviously wasn't going to be able to convince someone that didn't want to believe what I had to say. It was just funny because she is going to school for nursing. You'd think she would have learned some basics about how the body works. ugh.

To you ladies that have been doing this for a while, what do you say to people that want to argue with you about NFP/FAM as an effective method of birth control??

My family will also NOT believe me that it is a "safe" method. I combated it with all of the side effects of the hormonal birth control and personal experiences with it. I eventually had to give up on that and just said that they will just have to see that it works by me not getting pregnant. It honestly took 2 years, but they finally realized that if you follow the rules, it works!

Maybe I'm not the best to answer to this... we've successfully conceived five children in about ten years using NFP. Nobody even asks anymore!

I've not told anyone who doesn't belong to JM. LOL. They all know I had to go off the pill, but they all know I'm determined to be skinny as heck for my wedding, so I must be doing something to not get pregnant between now and then.

Good ideas, everyone! I just think it is a silly thing to argue about. I mean, if for some reason I do get pg while using it, it's not like it is there baby to take care of. lol. Why do they care? I think people just like to be right all the time. Oh well, lesson learned there!

Well, for the record - when I was in nursing we learned hardly anything about female fertility. I knew more from the NFP sessions I'd had with my fiance than I got out of nursing school.

I always just mention the most recent Billings study. It was published in 2006 and included over 3 million couples in China (where they obviously can't afford to mess around with something unreliable due to the one child policy). Pregnancy rate was 1%.

Since the effectiveness can vary quite a bit between the different forms of NFP and FAM, if you want to have this debate with people....you'd have to convince them that whatever you use on fertile days is reliable. But it's also perfectly fine to let people know your family planning decisions are between you and your DH, it really isn't anyone else's business.

I don't tell most people. People who question it, I say it has the same success rate as condoms and that usually shuts them up. It helps that I am kind of known as "research girl" and people know that if they get into an argument of facts with me they are not going to win. If I'm willing to argue over it, then I've researched it extensively. Period.

So then they talk about how it would just be too much work for them. I am like it takes me about 10 seconds a day, but whatever.

She was more just not knowledgable about how often a woman ovulates, etc, which I thought was odd. I mean, even as a woman, I know typically that you only ovulate once per month (with some exceptions.) She didn't believe that it works on a schedule, with a certain luteal phase, etc. It was weird. I mean, I learned most of that in health class! lol.

That is a great example about the Billings study, Shawna, I'll have to use that next time. Luckily I learned my lesson early and won't be telling anyone else.

So funny thing here, a lot of the people who I run into that won't accept NFP (I don't talk about FAM since I practice NFP) are the people who also tell me Christian's don't believe in science. So then I get really annoyed when I'm trying to explain that this is like scientifically driven, research based, etc. and it is me the Christian who is believing it and not them...

However, with that said, there are people that don't believe in science, maybe your SIL IS one of them
