Hey everyone, I haven't been around much in the past few months, but I need some help. DH and I are now TTC (yay!) and this is our first cycle TTC.

This has been an *INCREDIBLY* confusing cycle... not totally sure if I ovulated or not, but the whole cycle lasted *only* 18 days. Really. There was some kind of temp shift... sort of... but the whole thing is just confusing. If I ovulated when I think I ovulated, then my luteal phase was only FOUR days.

Here's my chart: Niamh Dhabolt's FAM Charts - Cycle 20: TTC- Sept- Oct. 2011

Please help! TIA

Were any of your temps disturbed (taken at different times or anything?)

I think with the lubricative CM that immediately preceded the bleeding, I would consider this bleed highly fertile breakthrough bleeding. It could be related to ovulation. I wouldn't consider it the start of a new cycle.

No, each temp was taken within about 30-40 minutes of "normal wake time" (which is normal for me. I've been charting like that from the beginning. 30-40 minutes doesn't really effect my temps much at all).

It's also not uncommon for me to get some fertile CM and sensations right before I start my period.

I considered it the start of a new cycle though because it was *definitely* not spotting... it was full-on flow. Not heavy, but definite period flow (or if I didn't ovulate, then withdrawal bleeding).

I'm totally considering myself still fertile though (I'm working on the assumption that this was anovulatory... and therefore, even though I'm having a "period" now, I can still ovulate at any time). But if I *did* ovulate, is it possible that a non-viable egg that ovulated could have somehow messed up my luteal phase?

I'm just glad this isn't a TTA cycle, lol... since we're now TRYING, there isn't really any "risk".

Thanks for the help, Shawna! <3

ETA: To clarify, I take my temperature *immediately* upon waking... I just meant that I wake up +/- 30-40 minutes of my designated "wake-time" for charting. But this doesn't really effect my temps much.

Yes, most women notice some wetness or CM before AF - but it usually isn't overly lubricative or slippery. That sensation is most often associated with rising or high estrogen (breakthrough bleeding) rather than dropping estrogen (withdrawal). Breakthrough bleeding can be light spotting, as heavy as a regular period, or someplace in between! It's a myth that ovulation bleeding won't be more than a bit of spotting. Temps can begin to rise a few days before or after ovulation.

All that said, if you did release an immature follicle - the Corpus Luteum will also be immature and not produce enough progesterone for a healthy LP. The length of the LP is directly related to the quality of the egg released at ovulation.

Ok! That helps a lot! I *was* under the impression that ovulation bleeding would just be like spotting and wouldn't be like a full-on period-type flow. So it's possible that's what it could be. I was spotting for 3 days before the "period-flow" though, is that normal with breakthrough bleeding?

And the second part is helpful too. I thought the same thing... that an immature follicle would effect the corpus luteum. So it's possible that this is what happened.

I guess I'll have to wait it out and see. What a confusing cycle though! :-S

I'm not very good at this whole chart reading thing, but I do understand the frustration behind the confusing charts!

I forgot to add this... but *today's* temperature plummeted to 97.7... which was another reason why I considered this a new cycle.
