Alright, well, question for you, if there's an answer other than "you're an idiot" (I've been kicking myself in the butt for months now, so I fully understand -- I was an idiot. Haha) - Filed my taxes last year. 2008, whatever. The ones that were due in 4/09. Turns out the SS Administration gave me the wrong social security number for my baby, so my filing got rejected. So instead of them owing ME $1500, they thought I owed THEM $1000. Called, lady told me "oh, I'll send you a form for correction, and that'll take care of everything." All they sent me was a form saying I owed them money. So, I've been meaning to re-file for a long time now, but I kept forgetting. I'm really scatterbrained. So now it's time for 2009 taxes. Question is, what should I do? Should I file both years at once, or file '08 and then wait a month to file '09? ...Or should I drive down to the IRS building, stand outside the door and cry until someone feels bad for me? I really don't know what to do at this point.
So what you are saying is that 2008 never actually ended up being filed or that it was filed but needs to be corrected?? If it was never filed at all, then you need to file it now. Use 2008 forms for 2008. If it was filed, but needs correction to add your daughter then you need to amend the return using form 1040x for 2008. The letter they sent you likely includes penalties and interest so you need to respond to that letter as well as file the return. You need to do 2009 as usual, you don't need to wait really although if the IRS thinks you owe them money you may want to wait to file 2009 until 2008 is taken care of because they may try to take the money they think you owe out of your refund for this year.
You can try to get help from the IRS office or take your letter and all your paperwork for both years to a tax office like HR Block and they *should* be able to take care of everything. It's like anything else, some offices are awesome (like mine, lol) and some don't know what they are talking about.
Good luck, HTH a bit!
