I usually look for things that are just extras that we don't have to have and trim from there first. I won't usually trim the grocery bill but I will trim entertainment. I don't trim internet or cell phones as we tried that and it didn't work out. So now I know not to trim those areas.
My DH is OOW and we have been living on U/E so our budget is trimmed to the end.
We pay electric first, then phone, then trash. We have gone without trash but for $25 a month it is worth it. Then car gas, cigarettes and diapers. We have food stamps.
Any way we sold the house in AZ the last second before the market tanked and used the profit to pay in full for our property. So we don't have rent or morgage but we have property taxes for about $600 a year.
For us, things that we consider extra and have never had (while others may consider them essential) are:
fancy cell phones (we joke that I have a dumb phone.....I pay for $100 of minutes and it lasts me the whole year)
huge cable packages (we have just above the basic package)
movie subscription services
going out for lunch a lot (hubby gets $15/week)
But on the flip side, hubby kept his plane and his old car we restored.
Gosh I wish my property taxes were only $600 a year . Mine are about $3000 a year . We don't have cable either just basic local channels and that is mostly to bring our internet bill down by $15. I did just call and ask what deals they were doing and could they help out. They gave us another $15 off what we were paying so that was nice.
