I think the hardest part for me was just deciding how much allowance/fun money to give us. The reality is we like to do things not just sit at home. So trying to balance that with paying off bills was tough.
I tend to set unrealistic goals at times. I try to say we'll only spend X on Z, but a lot of the time we go over and not really because of being extreme, just life happens. Take clothes for instance, I'll be optimistic and think that we could go a month without buying something, but then it always seems someone needs something. When I look back over the last few years, the amounts we are spending are so close a lot of the time, so I think it's what we really do need.
So I have my optimistic budget and then my realistic budget. For the first 5 months of 2011, I've been under my optimistic budget once-, under the realistic one 3 times, and then over once. June is looking like it will be over again. BUT overall, the average will be under the realistic budget. Our emergency fund is based on what the realistic budget is, but if we truly needed to rely on the e-fund, I know we'd be okay for a bit.
Hardest part was realizing how much in debt we really are, and how much more we spend each month than we take in. It was a tough pill to swallow. This is my first month actually trying to set a realistic budget so well see how it goes from here.
well I currently do not have a budget, so the hardest part for me is coming to terms with the fact that we will need to set one in the near future. We are comfortable in our day to day lifestyle, but we have accumulated some debt over the years and really have no way to get out of the debt except to pay the monthly payments
